Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Pulling up, the first impressions were just spot on – this converted barn sits bang in the heart of the South Downs, with rolling hills stretching out under those massive autumn skies that feel endless. The interior? Blimey, it’s a proper stunner, all done up with the most amazing design that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a posh magazine spread. No wonder it’s so popular for holidays or even those team away days; it’s luxury without the pretension, and the location’s a dream – close enough to Lewes for a mooch, or a quick hop to Brighton if you fancy, but far enough to escape the world. With the season turning, it was perfect: we arrived to that fresh, earthy scent of fallen leaves, and the big windows framed views of the hills bathed in soft, slanting light. Autumn shaped the whole trip, really. Mornings started with mist clinging to the valleys like a gentle duvet, inviting us out for bracing walks along the South Downs Way. We’d crunch through leaves, spotting the odd deer darting about, and the air had that invigorating nip that makes your cheeks glow. One day, we wandered over to nearby Glyndebourne – not for an opera (tickets are like gold dust in season), but just to soak up the estate’s autumnal vibes, with the gardens all fiery reds and the faint hum of harvest in the air. Back at the barn, we’d return to its endless treats: a kitchen kitted out for serious cooking, where I attempted a proper roast with veg from a local farm shop. Let’s just say my efforts were enthusiastic, if not entirely Michelin-starred – plenty of laughs over slightly wonky spuds. Evenings were pure magic as the days shortened. We’d light the fire (it roared to life like it was waiting for us), crack open local ales from Lewes breweries, and dine in style – one night, a private chef popped in with dishes using seasonal Sussex bounty, like roasted pumpkin and game from the Downs. The big skies turned inky quick, stars popping out crisp and clear, making you forget London ever existed. I had a quiet moment one night, staring out at the hills silhouetted against the sunset, reflecting on how the autumn hush let me switch off properly. No rushing about, just nesting in a place that nails every detail. A few days in Charleston Farmhouse sealed it – that short stroll away, with its bohemic vibes and gardens bursting with late dahlias, felt like stepping into a Vanessa Bell painting under the mellow October sun. We even squeezed in a cycle along quiet lanes, the golden light filtering through the trees. By the end, as the frost started nipping at the grass, I was already plotting a return for next autumn’s colours. If you’re after a seasonal escape that feeds the soul, this is it – the Downs in fall are unbeatable. |
