Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to that cosy little holiday cottage in Sussex after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from London full of beans, imagining myself cruising down the A3 with the windows down and some cracking indie playlist on. But no, halfway through Surrey, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and directed me straight into a muddy farm track that looked more like a scene from a disaster movie. My little hatchback wasn't built for off-roading, and I spent a good 20 minutes reversing into a hedge while a flock of sheep looked on with what I swear was smug amusement. Heart racing, covered in a light sheen of sweat, I eventually extricated myself, only to realise I'd left my phone charger tangled in the hedge. Classic me – always one step away from needing a proper adult to sort me out.

By the time I pulled up to the cottage, the sun was dipping low, casting this gorgeous golden glow over the garden, and all that arrival chaos melted away like ice cream on a hot day. It's one of those proper old-school places – a quaint detached cottage with a thatched roof and flower baskets spilling over the front door, tucked away in a peaceful spot near Haslemere. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, even if I did have to wrestle the wonky gate open with my suitcase. Stepping inside, I was hit with that instant 'ahh' feeling – fresh linen scent, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and a kitchen that looked ready for some serious tea-making action. The views out the back to the rolling Sussex hills had me grinning like an idiot; it's the kind of spot that makes you forget the M25 traffic jams back home.

I dumped my bags and headed straight out for a wander, still buzzing from the drive's drama. Just a short stroll away is that lovely village green in Haslemere, where I grabbed a pint at the cosy local pub – nothing fancy, just proper ale and a ploughman's that hit the spot. The barman chuckled when I recounted my muddy escapade; turns out, half the guests have a similar tale. Back at the cottage, I fired up the stove, cracked open a bottle of local wine, and watched the twilight settle over the garden. There was this moment, sat there with the flames crackling, where I had a proper think – life's too short for perfect plans, innit? That little mishap on the way here made the arrival all the sweeter, reminding me why I love these getaways: the unexpected bits that turn into the best stories.

Next morning, I was up early for a gentle hike along the nearby woodland paths – think ancient trees, dappled sunlight, and not another soul in sight. Popped into town for fresh croissants from the bakery, then spent the afternoon lounging in the garden with a book, listening to birdsong. It's funny how a place like this resets you; no emails, no rush, just pure Sussex charm. If you're after a holiday that feels like a warm hug from an old mate, this is it – mishaps and all. Can't wait to come back.
