Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Sussex last month – my wife and I piling into the car with a boot full of snacks, maps (yes, actual paper ones, because sat-navs always let us down), and that bubbling excitement for a proper getaway. We’d booked this cosy little stable conversion just outside Chichester, the sort of place that promises lazy mornings and countryside air. But of course, things didn’t go entirely to plan. About halfway there, near the A27, we hit a massive tailback from roadworks. What should’ve been an hour and a half turned into three, with me drumming my fingers on the wheel and her raiding the crisps. “If we don’t get there soon,” I joked, “we’ll arrive smelling like a chip shop.” We both cracked up, turning the delay into a mini picnic on the hard shoulder.

By the time we rolled up, golden hour was hitting just right, and blimey, the first impressions were spot on. Nestled in a quiet spot with views over fields, this converted stable had that perfect rustic charm – whitewashed walls, a cheeky little courtyard, and French doors begging to be flung open. We stepped inside, dropped the bags, and just breathed it all in. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the faint whiff of hay. Anticipation? Mate, it was electric – like we’d stumbled into our own slice of telly-perfect countryside.

The next few days were pure, unadulterated cottage bliss, the kind that makes you forget emails exist. Mornings started with brekkie on the patio: fresh eggs from a nearby farm shop (cracked ’em ourselves, naturally), thick toast slathered in marmalade, and coffee strong enough to wake the dead. We’d wander hand-in-hand to Dell Quay, barely a mile away, for a gentle stroll along the harbour. Muddy paths, swooping gulls, and those little boats bobbing about – it’s the sort of simple magic that recharges your soul. One afternoon, we hired bikes from a Chichester outfit and pedalled over to Pagham Harbour, spotting egrets and seals without a care. Lunch was fish and chips from a takeaway van, eaten on a bench with sandy fingers and zero regrets.

Of course, cottage life comes with its chaos, doesn’t it? The washing machine decided to flood the utility room on day two – water everywhere, us in wellies mopping like Keystone Cops. Laughing our heads off, we turned it into a game, racing with towels. And the wood burner? Took us three goes to get it going without smoking out the place. But that’s the joy of it – no polished hotel sheen, just real, scruffy fun that pulls you closer.

Evenings were for unwinding: her with a book, me fiddling with a puzzle, a bottle of local red from the Chichester market. One night, staring at the stars through the skylight, I had a proper moment. Work’s been manic lately, and I’ve been rushing about like a headless chicken. Here, though, time slowed. It hit me: these quiet escapes with her are what keep us grounded. No grand adventures needed – just us, a bit of Sussex magic, and the happy disorder of home-from-home.

We left buzzing, already plotting the next one. If you’re after that relaxed couple’s vibe, Sussex stables like this are gold dust. Proper restorative stuff.
