Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that little spot near the South Downs in Sussex – it was mid-autumn, you know, that crisp October stretch where the leaves are turning all golden and the air’s got that proper fresh bite to it. Me and the family piled into the car from London, kids buzzing in the back with snacks flying everywhere, and wouldn’t you know it, about halfway there I took a wrong turn onto some narrow country lane. The sat-nav went haywire, and we ended up dodging a flock of sheep that scattered like they owned the road. Laughing about it now, but at the time I was sweating a bit – classic me, always the navigator who isn’t.

By the time we pulled up, the sun was dipping low, painting everything in that soft amber glow that makes autumn feel magical. Parked up easily – plenty of space, even with our ancient estate car – and as we wandered through the garden, the first impressions hit hard. What a gem! This thatched cottage looked straight out of a storybook, all cosy and inviting against the fading light, with the garden still bursting with late-blooming flowers and the promise of misty mornings ahead. Stepping inside, the warmth wrapped around us like a hug; we’d timed it perfectly for that seasonal shift where you crave a proper retreat.

Claimed the ground-floor bedroom first – king-size, straight out to the garden, with an en-suite that felt like a spa after our road antics. The kids dashed upstairs to the other kings, loving the big windows framing the turning trees outside, and that truckle bed room turned into their den for the week. Up on the first floor, the bathroom’s serene vibe was spot on for chilly evenings, and the kitchen became our hub – whipping up hearty stews on the hob as rain pattered the windows, the kind of meals that taste better in autumn’s gloom.

Evenings were pure bliss in the lounge, sprawled on the sofas by the open fire, Smart TV flickering with a family film while turquoise lights cast a gentle glow. That fire crackled away, chasing off the damp chill that creeps in this time of year – proper toasty, it was. And the hot tub? Oh mate, slipping into that bubbling warmth under a starry sky, leaves swirling in the breeze, with the garden all enclosed and private… it was the perfect antidote to the world’s madness. We’d lounge out there till our fingers pruned, watching the sunset turn the thatch pinkish, feeling miles away from everything.

Venturing out was tempting, but autumn made the cottage hard to leave. Still, we nipped to nearby Arundel Castle one afternoon – just a short drive, and the grounds were stunning with all those fiery colours and fallen leaves crunching underfoot. History soaked in without the summer crowds, wandering the gardens in our wellies as the light faded early. Back home, we’d dine al fresco in the courtyard when the sun peeked out, wrapped in blankets, or huddle inside if the wind picked up. It got me reflecting, you see – rushing about life as I do, this break reminded me how a simple seasonal shift can reset you. No grand plans needed; just good company, a crackling fire, and Sussex doing its cosy thing. We left feeling utterly recharged, already plotting a winter return for those frosty walks. What a stay.
