Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pulborough last month – me behind the wheel of our battered old estate car, sat-nav insisting we were nearly there, and then bam, a rogue pheasant decides to play chicken right across the A29. Heart in my mouth, I slammed on the brakes, and we all burst out laughing as it scarpered into the hedge. “Welcome to the countryside,” my wife quipped, and just like that, the tension melted away. We were buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know? Windows down, proper summer breeze whipping through, dreaming of kicking back after months of the daily grind.

Pulling up to the barn conversion was pure magic – this cosy, low-slung beauty nestled in its own slice of Sussex heaven, all welcoming curves and that just-right charm that screams “relax here”. First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled out, bags in hand, and the owner waved us in with a cheery “Make yourselves at home!” No fuss, no faff – just us, the key, and the promise of proper downtime.

From that moment, it was all about doing sod all, and I mean that in the best possible way. Our days blurred into this glorious haze of laziness. Mornings started late, with coffee brewed on the go and taken out to the garden. Oh, that garden – wildflower meadows rolling out to ancient trees, a hammock slung between them begging to be tested. I’d flop into it with a dog-eared paperback (trying Hemingway again, failing gloriously as my eyelids drooped), while the kids – sorry, young adults now – sprawled on blankets with their phones forgotten. The sun filtered through the leaves, birdsong everywhere, and not a single notification to ruin it. Bliss.

Afternoons? More of the same, but with tweaks. A gentle wander down the lane to pick blackberries (ending in stained fingers and mild squabbles over the best ones), then back for lazy lunches of cheese, crackers, and whatever we’d rustled up from the local Pulborough deli. No grand plans, no hikes up distant hills – just us pottering in the garden, firing up the barbecue for sausages that tasted of actual smoke, not a packet. Evenings melted into dusk, reading by fairy lights strung across the patio, a glass of Sussex wine in hand. I caught myself staring at the stars one night, thinking, “When did I last just… stop?” Work’s relentless treadmill had me forgetting how to breathe easy, and here, in this unhurried bubble, it all clicked back into place. A gentle nudge from the universe: slow down, mate, life’s not a race.

There was this one hilarious moment when I tried “mindful meditation” from an app – sat cross-legged on the grass, eyes shut, only to be dive-bombed by a cheeky robin who nicked my biscuit. We howled with laughter, and that was the highlight. No epic adventures needed; the joy was in the nothing-much. Sussex does that to you – wraps you in its green quiet and makes you grateful for the pause. We left refreshed, promising to return for more of the same. If you’re after a holiday that’s all heart and zero hustle, find yourself a spot like this. You won’t regret it.
