Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Sussex last month – my partner and I piling into the car with a boot full of snacks, maps (yes, actual paper ones, because who trusts sat-nav these days?), and that bubbling excitement for a proper getaway. We’d been craving a break from the daily grind, just the two of us, no kids or deadlines in sight. But about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue flock of sheep decided our narrow country lane was their personal catwalk. Hooves everywhere, woolly chaos, and me frantically reversing while Dave yelled, “Mind the ditch!” We laughed it off eventually, but it set the tone for that gloriously daft cottage life we were after.

Pulling up to the place in this quaint little village at the foot of the South Downs felt like stepping into a postcard. It’s a contemporary open-plan studio, all light and airy with bi-fold doors that fling wide onto a secluded garden, a paved terrace, and – joy of joys – a bubbling hot tub. First impressions? Blown away. Tucked away yet with two cosy pubs just a stroll down the lane, and those epic walks right on the doorstep. We dumped our bags, cracked open a bottle of fizz, and just soaked it in. After months of city hustle, this was pure bliss.

The next few days blurred into the best kind of relaxed rhythm. Mornings started with lazy brews on the terrace, watching mist lift off the Downs while we munched on fresh croissants from the village bakery. We’d amble out for gentle hikes – nothing too strenuous, just those rolling paths up to spots like Ditchling Beacon, where the views stretch forever and the air smells like heaven. One afternoon, we wandered to the Royal Oak for a ploughman’s lunch; cheese so sharp it could cut glass, and a pint that hit the spot. Back at the property, it was hot tub time – steaming away aches from the walks, gin in hand, giggling about nothing.

Of course, it wasn’t all Instagram-perfect. I managed to lock myself out mid-afternoon, barefoot and in my swimsuit, reduced to peering through the bi-folds like a deranged meerkat while Dave fished for the spare key. Cottage chaos at its finest! And the garden? A sneaky fox visited one night, eyeing our leftovers with cheeky disdain. But those little hiccups just made it feel real, you know? No polished resort vibes here – just us, unwinding in the simple pleasures.

Evenings were for firing up the barbecue (Dave’s speciality: slightly charred bangers that tasted better than they looked), then curling up with a book or a film as the stars popped out. Reflecting on it now, sat back home with the washing piling up, I realise how much we needed that reset. In the rush of life, we forget how restorative a quiet corner of Sussex can be – fresh air, good food, and each other’s company. If you’re after a chilled couple’s escape, hunt down a gem like this. We’re already plotting our return.
