About Bath
My digs were this cracking one-bedroom apartment tucked into the redeveloped St Catherine's Hospital, right in the centre, with the Roman Baths and Thermae Spa practically on the doorstep. It opens onto this serene courtyard garden—proper peaceful, like your own little hideaway amid the hustle. I dumped my bags, kicked off my shoes, and immediately felt that mix of modern cosiness and a nod to the area's history. Perfect for a solo foodie jaunt, which is exactly what I had planned. First order of business: raiding the local markets. Bath's got those fantastic farmers' markets popping up regularly, and I hit one straight away on my first morning. Picked up the freshest sourdough from a stall run by this cheery couple, some creamy Somerset Brie, and a punnet of strawberries that were so sweet they didn't need anything else. Back at the apartment, I had a bash at a simple lunch—smashed avo on toast with a poached egg from the same market. It was a right mess; the yolk exploded everywhere, and I nearly set off the smoke alarm faffing with the hob. Laughing at myself in the mirror, I thought, "Blimey, mate, you're no MasterChef, but it's your holiday—embrace the chaos." That little moment reminded me why I love these self-catering spots; it's not just eating out, it's playing house with top-notch local grub. Evenings were for pubs, naturally. The Raven down the road became my local—cosy as anything, with a cracking beer selection. I went for their fish and chips one night, golden batter, mushy peas on the side, and a pint of Butcombe ale that slid down a treat. Another evening, I wandered to The Pump Room for a fancy high tea (well, afternoon tea, but who's counting?), all scones with clotted cream and those dainty sandwiches. Pure indulgence. But I kept it real with more market hauls: artisanal charcuterie, local cheeses, and a bottle of West Country cider. Dinner one night was a heroic attempt at pasta with chorizo and peppers—overcooked the pasta a tad, but washed down with cider in the courtyard, it felt five-star. I also squeezed in a cheeky visit to Sally Lunn's for their historic buns—slathered in butter and strawberry jam from the market, they were heavenly. And don't get me started on the Bath Artisan Foodhouse nearby; grabbed some pork pies and chutneys for snacks. Honestly, staying central like this meant everything was walkable—no faffing about with taxis. By the end of the week, I'd eaten like a king, laughed off my kitchen disasters, and reflected on how these simple, food-focused days recharge the soul better than any spa soak. Bath's a gem for it—I'll be back for more market mayhem soon. |
