Our trip to Bath staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Bath – we’d packed the car to the brim with crisps, cheese straws, and enough tea bags to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just outside Bristol. It rerouted us down some winding lane that felt more like a goat track, with me white-knuckling the wheel and my other half tutting about “trusting technology again.” Twenty minutes later, we emerged blinking into the golden afternoon light, hearts lifting at the sight of Bath’s honey-coloured rooftops peeking over the hills. The anticipation bubbled up – after months of school runs and deadlines, this was our proper escape.

Pulling up to the property, we were smitten straight away. It’s one of those cosy terraced cottages tucked into a quiet street, all Georgian elegance with a cute little front garden bursting with lavender. The door creaked open to a welcoming hug of a place: low ceilings, a squishy sofa by the fireplace, and a kitchen that screamed “whip up a full English here.” First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local cider from the offie down the road, toasting to no alarm clocks for three whole days.

Bath’s got that magic for a chilled couple’s break – no need for grand plans, just pottering about. Mornings kicked off with brekkie in the cottage, me burning the toast while she perfected poached eggs, laughing at the smoky chaos. We’d wander hand-in-hand to the Roman Baths, marvelling at the steaming pools without joining the hordes of selfie-stick tourists. Lunch was always a simple picnic by Pulteney Bridge – cheese ploughman’s from the deli, watching the weir splash below. Afternoons melted into lazy rambles around the Royal Crescent, pretending we were Jane Austen extras, her nattering on about the architecture while I nodded wisely (mostly).

Evenings were pure cottage bliss. We’d fire up the hob for pasta, spilling sauce everywhere in our enthusiasm, then flop on the sofa with Netflix and a blanket fort. One night, the heavens opened, turning our planned park stroll into a soggy dash home – cue peeling off wet socks by the radiator, giggling like kids. Simple pleasures, really: the clink of wine glasses, her head on my shoulder, that rare quiet where the world fades.

Looking back, it was a gentle nudge to slow down. We’re so caught up in the rush, aren’t we? This break reminded me that happiness hides in the everyday muddles – a shared cuppa, a daft mishap, the comfort of just us two in a borrowed home. Bath worked its charm, leaving us recharged and already plotting the next getaway. If you’re after that cosy reset, hunt out a spot like this. You won’t regret it.
