Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Cornwall – that classic British holiday start with a cheeky mishap. We’d piled into the car in Devon, full of excitement about escaping to some proper coastal peace, but halfway along the A30, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It sent us down a narrow lane that got progressively more Cornish, twisting through hedges so tight I was convinced we’d end up in someone’s front garden. After a few wrong turns and a mild panic about scraping the wing mirrors, we finally spotted the rugged track leading to our tucked-away holiday spot. Heart racing a bit, but as we crested the hill, blimey, what a first impression. Rolling hills dipped straight into turquoise seas, and there it was: this quirky coastal cottage, all character and charm, plonked right off the South West Coast Path. The anticipation built on that bumpy arrival – worth every pothole.

From the off, it felt like the perfect base for getting properly lost, which is exactly what we did. No grand plans, just boots on and out the door, letting the paths lead us to those hidden gems you only find by accident. First morning, we wandered a bit aimlessly along the cliffs, veering off the main trail onto what looked like a sheep track. Turned out to be a secret path to a tiny cove I’ve never seen on any map – just golden sand, waves lapping turquoise water, and not a soul in sight. We spent hours there, paddling in the shallows, feeling like we’d stumbled on Narnia. Lunch was a picnic of pasties nabbed from Penzance market the day before – proper job, flaky and stuffed with local beef.

The real magic was in the getting lost. One afternoon, aiming for Sennen Cove’s surf, we took a ‘shortcut’ that had us scrambling down rugged cliffs to a pebbly beach tucked under towering rocks. Waves crashed like they were putting on a private show, and we bodysurfed until we were knackered. Emerging all sandy and grinning, we found a hidden harbour nearby – think weathered boats bobbing in a glassy inlet, seals popping up to say hello. No crowds, just us and the sea. Evenings, we’d meander back via off-the-beaten-track spots: a wildflower meadow buzzing with bees, or an old smugglers’ path winding through gorse that opened to views over Porthcurno’s sands. Dinner was always a treat – fresh seafood from Newlyn’s harbourside stalls, scoffed at a cosy pub with pints of local ale. Nothing fancy, but it hit the spot after a day of accidental adventures.

Looking back, that gentle self-reflection hits me: in our rush-rush lives, we rarely let ourselves get lost on purpose. Here, with the cottage’s peaceful vibe and those wild landscapes urging you off the path, it was effortless. We found joy in the unplanned – a forgotten lighthouse trail leading to cliff-edge picnics, or a misty morning hike revealing a freshwater pool perfect for a dip. It’s the essence of West Cornwall: rugged, rewarding, and full of surprises if you stray from the guidebook. If you fancy ditching the crowds for your own hidden gems, this is the spot. We’re already plotting a return.
