Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to our little holiday cottage on the North Cornish coast near St Agnes after what felt like the world's longest drive from Bristol. We'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting, but about halfway there, disaster struck – or rather, a rogue seagull decided my windscreen was its personal canvas. Cue an impromptu car wash stop in some rainy services near Bodmin, laughing our heads off as we scrubbed away the evidence. Still, by the time we trundled down those narrow lanes, anticipation was bubbling up. What would this tucked-away spot be like? I pictured cream teas and crashing waves, but honestly, I was just ready to flop.

Pulling up, my first impressions were spot on – this cosy cottage, all classic Cornish charm with its whitewashed walls and pitched roof, sat snugly in a quiet spot overlooking the village. St Agnes unfolded below us, that perfect mix of old-school inns, cracking little restaurants, and quirky art galleries spilling with local talent. You could sense the creative buzz even from the garden gate. We dumped the bags and stepped straight into the lush back garden, wildflowers nodding in the sea breeze, with glimpses of the coastline peeking through. It was love at first sight. No grand plans, mind – this trip was all about doing bugger all, and it suited me down to the ground.

The joy of those lazy cottage days was pure bliss. Mornings started slow, brewing tea in the sun-dappled kitchen, then spilling out to the garden with books and a thermos. I'd sink into a lounger, feet up, lost in some dog-eared paperback while the other half dozed nearby. The coastal path was literally on our doorstep, tempting avid walkers and beach bums, but we barely budged. Instead, we'd potter about the garden, picking blackberries from the hedges (well, three berries and a lot of thorns), or just sit listening to the gulls. Lunch was a faff-free picnic of pasties from the village – proper ones, flaky and steaming – eaten straight from the paper on a rug.

Afternoons melted into that golden Cornish haze. A gentle amble down to one of the nearby beaches, like Trevellas or Trevaunance, toes in the sand, but never straying far. No surfing heroics or kayak capers for us; the thrill of sea fishing or hacking out with the local riding school felt worlds away. We'd rather watch the waves roll in, maybe skim a few stones, then head back for more reading. Evenings were for firing up the barbecue in the garden, cracking open a cider, and letting the day fade. One night, under a sky full of stars, I caught myself reflecting – life's rush back home had me wired like a Duracell bunny, but here? Slowing down felt revolutionary. Who knew doing nothing could recharge you more than any gym session?

Sure, gems like the iconic Wheal Coates engine house were a short hop away, but we saved our energy for the real magic: those unhurried moments in the cottage garden, book in hand, world on pause. If you're after a base to unwind amid St Agnes's natural beauty – with its thriving vibe and coastal paths begging for a stroll – this is it. We left feeling utterly restored, already plotting a return to our do-nothing paradise.
