Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
The drive down to Cornwall felt like the perfect kick-off to our little getaway, me and Sarah buzzing with that mix of excitement and 'why didn't we leave earlier?' regret. We'd crammed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army – crisps, pasties from a service station, and a thermos of tea – but about an hour in, just past Exeter, disaster struck. The sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, rerouting us down some winding B-road that had us white-knuckling it through sudden downpours and sheep dodging. "This is it," I joked to Sarah, "our grand adventure begins with a scenic tour of every pothole in Devon." We arrived a tad later than planned, hearts racing but grinning like idiots, pulling up to this cosy stone cottage tucked away in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. First impressions? Magic. The kind of place that whispers 'relax' the moment you step out, with rolling countryside on one side and the wild North Cornwall Coast crashing away on the other.

Nestled just over a mile from Boscastle's postcard-pretty harbour, it was the ideal spot for us – a child-free couple in our forties sneaking in some proper downtime. No kids meant no early-morning wakey-wakeys; instead, lazy mornings with the window flung open to the sound of gulls and the faint tang of sea salt. We'd wander down to the village that first afternoon, picking up fresh bread, local cheeses, and a bottle of something cheeky from the little shop, chatting with the locals who all seemed to know each other. Boscastle's got that timeless fishing village charm – we grabbed fish and chips from a spot overlooking the harbour, watching the boats bob about as the sun dipped low. Pure bliss.

The real joy was the simple stuff, though. Mornings spent pottering in the garden, brewing tea strong enough to stand a spoon in, while spotting buzzards wheeling overhead or – if we were lucky – a seal popping up along the coast path. One day, we ambled along the cliffs towards Forrabury, binoculars in hand, hoping for a glimpse of those protected species in the wildlife havens either side. Didn't see anything exotic, mind – unless you count me nearly twisting an ankle on a rogue rabbit hole. "Graceful as ever," Sarah laughed, and I had to admit, she's right; I'm all enthusiasm, zero coordination. That gentle tumble led to a proper sit-down moment on a bench, just us, the waves rumbling below, reflecting on how we never make time for this at home. Work's always nagging, but here? It melted away.

Evenings were cottage chaos at its best – me burning the toast while trying to master a pasty recipe (pro tip: don't wing it with shop-bought pastry), Sarah sorting the wood burner as the mist rolled in from the Camel Valley. We'd snuggle up with a board game, the kind that ends in giggles and accusations of cheating, or just read by lamplight, rain pattering on the roof. A quick jaunt to Tintagel one afternoon – it's not far – had us poking around the castle ruins, half-believing the King Arthur tales, then fuelling up with cream tea in one of those quirky pubs. No grand plans, just those everyday pleasures: coastal walks that leave you windswept and starving, pub pints with a view, and that deep, satisfied tiredness at day's end.

Looking back, it was the chaos – the sat-nav fail, the singed supper – that made it ours. In a world that's all go, this corner of Cornwall reminded us that slowing down, even with a few mishaps, is the real holiday win. Can't wait to go back.
