Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Redruth – that classic Cornish holiday start where you think you’ve got it all planned, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Bodmin. We ended up on some winding B-road that wasn’t even on the map, arguing over whether to trust the phone or my dodgy sense of direction. In the end, it added half an hour, but hey, it meant we stumbled on a little farm shop selling the creamiest clotted cream I’ve ever tasted, straight from a local herd. By the time we rolled up to the cottage, hearts racing a bit from the hills, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine cosy evenings and epic adventures.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. A snug little cottage, all charm and comfort, tucked right in the heart of things. Central spot like that makes it a fantastic base for exploring the region, with something to see and do in every direction. Handy for The Eden Project, Tate Gallery St Ives, National Maritime Museum Falmouth, Trelissick Gardens, Hall for Cornwall Truro (with its West End shows), Minack Theatre Penzance and Poldark Tin Mine (as seen in the TV series). But honestly, we barely scratched those – our trip turned into a proper treasure hunt for hidden gems, the sort you only find by getting gloriously lost.

Take day two: we meant to head to the Eden Project but took a wrong turn onto a lane barely wide enough for the car. Ended up at this forgotten cove near Pool, where the cliffs drop straight into the sea and there’s not a soul in sight. We parked up, scrambled down a sheep path, and spent hours beachcombing for sea glass, with seals popping their heads up like nosy neighbours. Lunch was pasties from a van we found by accident – flaky, steaming, and miles better than anything touristy.

Then there was the afternoon we got lost chasing a sign for “local walks” that led us to a wildflower meadow behind some allotments. It opened onto a bubbling stream where kingfishers darted about – I felt like we’d slipped into a David Attenborough documentary. We picnicked there till the sun dipped, laughing about how my “shortcuts” always pay off eventually. Another gem was stumbling on a tiny orchard café just off the Redruth backroads, run by a chap who pressed fresh cider into our hands and shared tales of smuggling routes from the old days. Proper off-the-beaten-track magic.

Mind you, it wasn’t all seamless. I had one of those gentle wake-up moments on the last evening, sat on the cottage patio with a cuppa, watching the mist roll in. Here I was, rushing about discovering secrets, but really, the best bit was just switching off – no signal half the time, no plans, just us and the unexpected. Getting lost taught me that Cornwall’s real charm isn’t the big names; it’s those accidental detours that stick with you. If you’re after a holiday that feels like your own secret, grab a place like this and let the lanes lead you astray. We’re already plotting the return.
