Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
First impressions? Spot on. It was this cosy, traditional spot right in the heart of Penzance, with everything you need for a lazy family break (well, just the two of us, but we count our blessings). We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of cold ones from the local offy, and just breathed it all in. No rush, no schedules – pure cottage bliss. The area’s got this brilliant maritime vibe, laced with smuggling tales that make you half-expect a peg-legged pirate to pop out from behind a hedge. It’s got one of the best climates in England too, mild and breezy, perfect for ambling about without breaking a sweat. We headed straight for the coast the next morning, parking up near Mullion and wandering down to Poldhu Cove. The sand was golden, the waves gentle enough for a paddle, and we spent hours beachcombing for bits of sea glass like a pair of overexcited kids. Lunch was fish and chips from a van – salty, greasy perfection wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench overlooking the surf. From there, it was onto Porthleven, that pretty fishing village with its harbour crammed with colourful boats bobbing about. We moored ourselves at a harbourside café for cream teas (jam first, obviously), watching the world go by. The chaos of cottage life kicked in that afternoon – I tried my hand at a pasty from scratch, only for the pastry to turn into a soggy disaster. Sarah laughed so hard she nearly cried, and we ended up ordering pizza instead. Simple pleasures, eh? Proper laughs over burnt edges and red wine. We laced up our boots for the South West Coast Path one day, puffing along cliffs with views that stop you in your tracks – wild, rugged beauty that makes city worries feel miles away. Closer to home, we popped into the National Seal Sanctuary, cooing over the rescues, and caught a show at Flambards Theme Park for a bit of nostalgic thrill-seeking (Sarah screamed louder than anyone half our age). Evenings were for firing up the barbecue in the garden, stars overhead, chatting about nothing and everything. Looking back, it was that gentle rhythm – the mishaps, the messing about, the quiet moments – that made it. Us two, a bit older, a bit wiser, rediscovering how good it feels to switch off and just be. If you’re after a relaxed Cornish getaway, hunt down a spot like this. You won’t regret it. |
