About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Longrock last summer – sat nav decided to throw a wobbly just past Exeter, sending us on a wild detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. We ended up in a muddy farm track, laughing our heads off as the car spluttered through a flock of bemused sheep. But oh, what a payoff when we finally rolled up to this cosy little barn conversion, tucked away in Longrock and a stone’s throw from the village pub. From the moment we stepped inside, with its warm, welcoming vibe perfect for a romantic Cornish getaway, I knew we’d struck gold. The anticipation had been building all week, and those first impressions? Spot on – sea glimpses from the windows and that fresh coastal air wafting in.

We weren’t here for the tourist traps; no, our plan was to let serendipity lead the way, and Cornwall delivered in spades. First hidden gem came by accident on day one: instead of heading straight to Penzance, just over a mile up the road, we took a wrong turn towards Marazion and stumbled upon this tiny, unmarked path snaking off the South West Coast Path. It led us to a secluded cove where the waves crashed like they were putting on a private show. No crowds, just us, a thermos of tea, and seals bobbing about in the distance. I sat there thinking, how often do we rush past these little wonders back home?

Getting lost became our superpower. One afternoon, ambling along the promenade in Penzance, we veered off towards the Jubilee Bathing Pool – that saltwater lido with its salty tang and retro charm – but missed the sign and ended up on a winding trail through wildflower meadows. It spat us out at a forgotten beach where the sand was littered with sea glass, smooth as jewels. We spent hours beachcombing, unearthing treasures that felt like pirate loot. Light-hearted panic set in when we realised we’d no signal, but that just made it better – proper disconnection, you know? A gentle nudge to reflect on how I’m always glued to my phone at home, missing the magic right under my nose.

The village pub saved us more than once, too. After another “lost” wander – this time looping back from Marazion’s quirky shops and bakeries, where we grabbed pasties that were pure heaven – we’d collapse there for a pint and locals’ tales. They tipped us off about a secret spot near the Mount, a tidal island you can glimpse from a mile away, but we found our own version: a quiet headland path overgrown with heather, perfect for sunset picnics. No surfing at Praa Sands for us; we were too busy chasing these off-the-beaten-path delights.

By the end of the week, I was a convert to the art of wandering without a map. That barn in Longrock wasn’t just a base; it was the launchpad for the best kind of holiday – the unplanned, soul-recharging sort that leaves you grinning at the memory of sheep, seals, and serendipity. If you’re after romance with a side of adventure, get yourself down there. You won’t regret it.
