About Cornwall
I finally made it to Newquay after what felt like the world's longest drive from Bristol, complete with a classic Cornish mishap – a massive tractor blocking the narrow lanes near St Agnes, turning my ETA into a bit of a joke. I'd been buzzing with anticipation the whole way, dreaming of that first salty sea breeze and kicking off my shoes on the sand. But as I pulled up just across from Tolcarne Beach, I was gobsmacked. This modern, dog-friendly studio – perfect for me and my scruffy border terrier, Alfie – looked like a proper gem. Sleek new build with a spacious open-plan vibe, right on the eastern edge of town. Great first impressions: sea views from the window, and Newquay's buzz just a short stroll away.

We dumped the bags and hit the coastal path straight away, the sun peeking out like it was personally welcoming us. Cornwall's cliffs are something else, aren't they? That first hike along the headland towards Fistral Beach was pure magic – waves crashing below, gulls wheeling overhead, and Alfie charging ahead like he'd owned the place forever. I felt that proper holiday glow, you know, the one where all your worries just evaporate with the tide.

But oh, the British weather – it's got a wicked sense of humour. Day two dawned bright, so we tackled the proper cliff-top walk to Crantock Beach, about three miles out. Wind in our hair, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and those epic views over the dunes. I even managed a cheeky picnic of pasties from a beachside van – proper job. Alfie was in heaven, splashing in rock pools. Then, like clockwork, the clouds rolled in thick as clotted cream. By afternoon, it was sheeting down, turning our planned amble back via the golf course paths into a soggy dash. We sheltered in a cove, laughing at how I looked like a drowned rat, and reflected on why I always pack too few woolly jumpers. Lesson learned: embrace the chaos, or at least the wellies.

Next morning, more of the same mercurial magic. Misty start had us sticking local, wandering the paths around Tolcarne itself – short but stunning, with caves to poke around and seals barking from the rocks. Sun broke through mid-hike, turning it golden. We rerouted from a longer trek to Porth when the rain lashed again, opting for a windswept loop along the cliffs instead. It forced us to slow down, really take in the drama of the sea smashing against the rocks. There's something humbling about it – me, a city lad who's spent too long staring at screens, getting a gentle reminder from Mother Nature that plans are for amateurs.

By the end of the week, we'd clocked miles of these weather-whipped walks, from quiet coves to blustery bluffs, all within easy reach of the door. Sure, the rain scuppered a few grander ideas, but it made for brilliant stories and that cosy glow back at the studio, tea in hand. Cornwall's got me hooked – next time, I'm bringing mates for the full hiking posse. If you're after a stylish seaside bolt-hole for two (or one plus pooch), this spot's a winner. Can't wait to go back.
