About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newquay – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, waterproofs and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for me to realise halfway through Devon that I’d left the satnav cable at home. Cue a frantic faff with phone maps and a detour through some winding lanes that had us giggling at the absurdity of it all. Still, by late afternoon, we rolled into this vibrant seaside town buzzing with that classic Cornish energy, hearts lifting at the first glimpse of the Atlantic crashing against the cliffs.

Pulling up to our cosy two-bed apartment, tucked just a stone’s throw from the action, I felt that proper holiday buzz – you know, the one where everything suddenly feels possible? It was one of those spotless, modern spots with a lived-in charm, perfect for kicking back after a day out. First impressions? Spot on. Lusty Glaze Beach twinkled below across Barrowfields Park, less than half a mile away, and the town centre was the same distance, with Newquay Train Station practically on the doorstep. We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a stroll, the sea air hitting us like a tonic.

We’d planned epic hikes along the coastal paths, dreaming of those Instagram-perfect views, but oh, the British weather – it’s got a mind of its own, hasn’t it? Day one dawned bright and blustery, ideal for a brisk walk over to Fistral Beach, just two miles up the coast. The path wound through rugged cliffs, gorse buzzing with bees, and we paused for ages watching surfers carve up the waves like pros. Felt alive, that did – proper invigorating, with the wind whipping our cheeks rosy.

Come day two, the skies turned moody, a proper Cornish mizzle rolling in that turned our ambitious trek into a soggy shuffle. No matter; we adapted, popping into town for a cheeky game of mini golf under cover at one of the arcades, laughing as the rain hammered down outside. It forced us to slow down, really soak in the little things – like the way the clouds parted just long enough for a rainbow over the harbour, or sharing fish and chips on a bench, hoods up, pretending we were explorers in some daft adventure film.

By midweek, the sun broke through properly, and we nailed a cracking hike around the headlands near Lusty Glaze. Steep paths, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and those heart-stopping drops to the sea – pure magic. We even rented bikes for a spin along the coastal trails, pedalling past dunes and stopping for pasties that were still warm from the bakery. The weather flips kept us on our toes, turning potential washouts into cosy evenings planning the next route, mugs of tea in hand.

Looking back, that mishap on the drive was a blessing – it reminded me holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but rolling with the squalls and savouring the salty freedom. Newquay’s coastal paths became our playground, rain or shine, and I’m already plotting a return. If you fancy waveside walks with a side of unpredictable weather, this is your spot. Couldn’t recommend it more.
