About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Mevagissey – we’d packed the car to the roof with wellies, beach toys and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the satnav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some winding lanes that felt like they were auditioning for a horror film. The kids were chanting “are we there yet?” while I white-knuckled the wheel past hedgerows taller than me, and just as I was plotting to blame the husband for picking the route, we popped out onto the coast road with that classic Cornish sea sparkle hitting us right in the face. Heart lifted instantly – you know that buzz when you’re finally nearly there?

Pulling up to the apartment, mere yards from the village and its postcard-pretty harbour, I let out a proper sigh of relief. It’s one of those cosy spots that just screams “kick back and forget the world” – perfect for a family like ours, all elbows and energy. First impressions? Magic. We dumped the bags and wandered straight into Mevagissey’s narrow streets, the air thick with fish and chips and that salty breeze. The harbour was buzzing with locals crabbing off the wall – we grabbed a line and bucket from a nearby shop, and within minutes the littlest one had hooked a monster (well, a tiddler, but she reckons it was Jaws).

Next morning, we ambled to the cafes for a full fry-up – nothing fancy, just proper greasy-spoon joy with pots of tea that could’ve doubled as bird baths. The village shops tempted us with pasties and fudge; I may have “accidentally” bought enough to sink a ship. But the real chaos kicked in when we hit the harbour for more crabbing – lines tangled, buckets tipped, and one epic splash fight later, we were soaked but howling with laughter. Cottage life, eh? It’s all about those messy moments that stick.

We kept it local, nipping over to Lost Gardens of Heligan just two miles away – those jungly paths and hidden grottos had the kids wide-eyed, pretending to be explorers (me included, if I’m honest). Closer still, a quick jaunt to Pentewan’s sandy beach, six miles up the road, for sandcastles and a cycle hire along the valley trails. Pure bliss, pedalling with ice creams dripping down our hands. Charlestown, only a few miles the other way, felt like stepping onto a film set with those tall ships bobbing and the shipwreck museum sparking tall tales over fish suppers in their pop-up harbour grub spot.

Looking back, amid the sand in the car seats and the inevitable post-crab laundry mountain, I had one of those quiet moments on the harbour wall at dusk. Watching the boats bob and the family knackered but grinning, I thought: this is it, isn’t it? Not the grand adventures, but these simple, soggy pleasures that recharge the soul. Cornwall does that to you – turns a daft family break into something golden. We’re already plotting the return.
