About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newquay – what should’ve been a straightforward motorway jaunt from Bristol turned into a proper comedy of errors. Satnav decided to play silly buggers halfway through Devon, rerouting us down some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. We ended up behind a tractor trundling along at snail’s pace, with me gripping the wheel and my other half tutting about how we’d miss the best of the day. By the time we hit the A30, the heavens opened, turning the road into a slick mess, and I nearly aquaplaned into a layby. “This is it,” I thought, “holiday cursed before it’s even begun.” But honestly, that little chaos just made the arrival all the sweeter.

Pulling up to our spot in Newquay, hearts still racing from the downpour, we were buzzing with that proper anticipation – you know, the kind where you’ve been dreaming of kicking back for months. And blimey, first impressions? Spot on. It’s this stylish contemporary apartment, all contemporary vibes, plonked right where you awaken to the soothing sound of the ocean and breathtaking panoramic views of Tolcarne Beach. Stepping inside after wrestling with the keycode (another mini-mishap – digits blurring in the rain), we were hit with this instant calm. Floor-to-ceiling windows framing the crashing waves, everything sleek and modern without feeling sterile. The kids bolted straight to the balcony, jaws dropped at the beach stretching out below, while I stood there, kettle on, just soaking it in.

That first afternoon sorted the arrival gremlins quick smart. We wandered down to Tolcarne – a proper Cornish stunner, that sheltered cove with golden sand and turquoise water even on a grey day. The mishap energy had us laughing as we slipped on the wet path, me nearly face-planting into a rock pool. But it was brilliant – paddling in the shallows, spotting seals bobbing offshore, the salt air wiping away the drive’s frustrations. Grabbed fish and chips from a nearby hut, proper greasy perfection, eaten on the sand while the tide rolled in. No fancy plans, just that raw seaside joy.

Evening rolled around, and we cracked open a bottle of local gin on the balcony, watching surfers carve up the waves as the sun dipped low. I had a quiet moment then, leaning on the rail, thinking how these little hiccups – the tractor, the rain, the key faff – are what make it real. Not some Instagram-perfect trip, but ours, with its wonky edges. Woke up next morning to gulls crying and that ocean hum, proper reset. Newquay’s got this magic, especially from a perch like this – close enough to nip into town for a cream tea or prowl Fistral Beach for a mooch, but far enough to feel like your own private escape. If you’re after a Cornish bolt-hole that delivers big on those first wow moments, this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
