About Cornwall
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. The satnav had a right old tantrum just past Bodmin, rerouting us through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel while my other half navigated with a bag of pasties. We arrived at our little holiday cottage near Maenporth in the late afternoon, hearts racing a bit from the detour but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation—you know, the kind where you imagine cracking open a cold drink and forgetting the world exists.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. This cosy cottage, all classic seaside charm with its whitewashed walls and pitched roof, sat tucked away in a peaceful spot overlooking the gentle curve of Maenporth Beach. The garden wrapped around it like a hug, wildflowers nodding in the breeze and a hammock swaying invitingly between two sturdy trees. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and just stood there grinning like idiots. No grand plans, no itinerary—just pure, unadulterated promise of doing sod all for a few days.

And that's exactly what we did. Mornings kicked off lazy as you like. I'd brew a pot of tea in the sunlit kitchen, grab a book from the shelf—some dog-eared Poldark novel that felt spot on—and flop into one of those cushy garden chairs. The other half would potter about, sometimes joining me with her sketchpad, other times vanishing into the hammock for a sneaky snooze. We'd listen to the distant crash of waves on Maenporth's sandy shore, maybe a gull squawking overhead, but mostly just the hum of bees in the lavender. Lunch was whatever we fancied: cheese ploughman's from the local farm shop down the road, eaten picnic-style on the grass. No rush, no fuss.

Afternoons melted into more of the same blissful nothing. A gentle wander down to the beach—it's only a short stroll away—where we'd paddle in the rock pools or flop on the sand with a thermos of coffee, watching families build wonky castles. Back at the cottage, it was reading marathons under the garden parasol, interrupted only by the odd game of cards on the patio table. One evening, as the sun dipped low painting the sky all pink and gold over the sea, I caught myself staring out, book forgotten. It hit me then—a quiet little moment of reflection—how rarely we let ourselves slow down like this. Back home, life's a treadmill of emails and errands, but here? Time stretched out, generous and kind. I felt properly recharged, like I'd remembered how to breathe deep.

Evenings were for unwinding in the garden as dusk settled, fairy lights twinkling on (cheers to whoever thought of that), with a glass of local cider and tales of nothing much. No big nights out in Falmouth or St Ives for us; the joy was in this pocket of calm, the cottage's garden our whole universe. We left feeling lighter, already plotting a return. If you're after proper downtime in Cornwall, find yourself a spot like this—it's magic for the soul.
