About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Carbis Bay last summer – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best, and my other half navigating with a map app that decided to go rogue halfway through Cornwall. We took a wrong turn near Hayle, ending up on some narrow lane that twisted like a Cornish pasty, bumping over potholes and dodging hedges that seemed intent on scratching the paintwork. A classic me moment: I’d packed too many snacks, so we were munching pasties while arguing over the route. But honestly, that little mishap set the tone – it forced us off the main roads and straight into the magic of getting properly lost.

By the time we pulled up, the sun was dipping low, and there it was: this elegantly furnished and beautifully appointed apartment, part of a luxurious development with spectacular sea views and just a short walk to the beach. First impressions? Blown away. Floor-to-ceiling windows framing the shimmering bay, everything sleek yet cosy, like it was waiting to hug you after the road chaos. I stood there with my cuppa, anticipation bubbling – what hidden delights were we about to stumble upon?

We didn’t faff about with tourist traps; instead, we let wandering be our guide. That first evening, a spontaneous stroll from the apartment led us down a barely marked path behind the dunes – not the main beach route everyone flocks to, but a sneaky little trail weaving through gorse and wildflowers. It spat us out at a secluded cove I’d never heard of, where the waves crashed turquoise against black rocks, and we had it all to ourselves. Seals bobbed about like cheeky locals waving hello. How we found it? Pure accident, thanks to that sat-nav fail priming us for detours.

Next day, fuelled by the apartment’s fab kitchen (I whipped up a full English that’d make my nan proud), we headed out for a “quick loop” that turned into an epic ramble. Veering off the path near Porthkidney Sands, we clambered over a stile and into a forgotten valley – think lush ferns, babbling brook, and not a soul in sight. We picnicked on cream teas smuggled from a tiny bakery in Lelant (found by sheer luck after missing a turning), slathered proper Cornish way: jam first, then cream. Laughing at my knack for getting us “lost” again, but secretly loving it. It made me reflect – back home, life’s all schedules and screens; here, embracing the unknown felt like hitting reset.

Evenings were for chilling on the balcony, watching the sun sink into the Atlantic, gin in hand from the local offie we discovered tucked away up a side street. One night, a wrong turn on the way back led to a cliff-edge bench overlooking a lighthouse I swear isn’t on any map – just us, the stars, and the sea’s whisper. No crowds, no fuss, just those off-the-beaten-track gems that make Cornwall sing.

Reflecting now, that holiday wasn’t about ticking boxes; it was the joy of the unplanned, the thrill of the hidden. If you’re heading to Carbis Bay, ditch the plans – get lost, and let Cornwall reveal her secrets. You won’t regret it.
