About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Carbis Bay – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a proper comedy of errors. We’d set off full of beans, kids buzzing in the back with their pasties and crisps, me humming along to some old Radio 2 tunes. But no, halfway through Devon, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a wild goose chase down some narrow lane that felt more like a sheep track. Branches scraping the sides, husband white-knuckling the wheel, and me trying not to spill my thermos of tea while the little ones chorused “Are we there yet?” every two minutes. By the time we hit Cornwall’s twisty A30, we were frazzled, late, and I’d somehow lost my favourite sunnies under the seat. Still, as the signs for St Ives popped up, that familiar holiday buzz kicked in – you know, the one where you can almost taste the sea air and feel the sand between your toes.

Pulling into Valley Road, knackered but grinning, we finally spotted the place. This luxury penthouse apartment, perched high with jaw-dropping views straight out to the Atlantic, St Ives Bay, and that iconic Godrevy Lighthouse winking in the distance. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, kids whooping as they dashed to the huge windows in the open-plan living area. Kitchen, dining, and sitting room all flowing together, every inch framed by that endless ocean vista. It’s the sort of spot that makes you exhale and think, “Yeah, we’ve earned this.”

We’d barely dropped our bags before the magic hit. Sun dipping low, painting the waves gold, and us cracking open a bottle of fizz on the balcony (well, prosecco for me, squash for the nippers). The three comfy bedrooms were a godsend – plenty of space for our lot of six without anyone drawing straws for the sofa. After that arrival chaos, it felt like a hug from an old mate. We wandered down the valley path that evening, all of ten minutes to the beach, toes in the sand at low tide, watching the scenic railway chug by. No need for the bus into St Ives just yet; we were too busy soaking it in.

Next morning, after a fry-up in that slick kitchen (views making even my dodgy scrambled eggs look gourmet), we hit the coastal path. Dramatic cliffs, gulls wheeling overhead, and not a cloud in sight. Popped into Carbis Bay beach for a paddle – water bracing as ever, but the kids didn’t care. Lunch at a little café down there, fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on the pebbles. Back at the flat by tea, collapsing in the sitting area with board games and more of those views. Honestly, that first day sorted us right out.

Looking back, that mishap on the road was a blessing in disguise. It made arriving feel like striking gold – from sweaty stress to pure bliss in under an hour. Cornwall does that, doesn’t it? Reminds you to slow down, breathe deep, and just be. If you’re after a family bolt-hole with sea on tap, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
