About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newquay – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a proper comedy of errors. We’d set off full of beans, playlist blasting some indie tunes, but halfway through Devon, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It rerouted us down these tiny, hedge-lined lanes that felt more like a rally stage than a holiday route. Then, to top it off, I managed to spill my builder’s tea all over the passenger seat just as we hit the A30. My other half wasn’t best pleased – “You’ve turned the car into a teabag!” she laughed, mopping it up with a service station napkin. By the time we crested the hill above Fistral Beach, we were knackered, sticky, and questioning our life choices.

But oh, pulling up to the place? Instant mood-lifter. Set just above Newquay’s world-class Fistral Beach, this development of luxury apartments sits on one of Cornwall’s best stretches of coastline, offering a fabulous base to discover the area. Ours was one of those sleek, modern pads with floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the Atlantic like a living painting. First impressions? Bloody marvellous – I mean, we stepped in, dumped the bags, and there it was: uninterrupted views of the waves crashing below, surfers dotting the water like seals on a feeding frenzy. The anticipation had been building all week, scrolling through photos and dreaming of pasties and paddles, but this exceeded it. Fresh, airy, with a balcony begging for a GandT at sunset. Chaos of the journey forgotten in a heartbeat.

We barely unpacked before heading out for a nose around. A quick wander down to Fistral – it’s literally a stone’s throw – and we were toes-in-sand, breathing that salty air. The beach was buzzing but not mobbed, perfect for a bit of people-watching: bronzed locals ripping waves, families building epic sandcastles. Grabbed fish and chips from a beachside hut, the kind that’s crispy outside, fluffy within, with mushy peas on the side. Sat on the pebbles, wind tousling our hair, and I had one of those moments – you know, gentle self-reflection over a battered cod. Here I was, mid-forties, still getting excited by the simple thrill of a proper beach day. Work stress? What work stress? This spot just resets you.

Next morning, we hired wetsuits from a shack right by the beach – Newquay’s surf scene is legendary, after all – and I gave bodyboarding a bash. Fell off more than I rode, naturally, emerging like a drowned labradoodle, but grinning ear to ear. Laughed it off with a pasty from the town centre (Reveille’s, if you’re taking notes – flakiest in the West). Evenings were pure bliss: balcony barbies with the sea symphony below, or a stroll to the Towan Headland for sunset views that make your heart swell. One night, we wandered into town for a pint at a harbour pub, live music drifting out, fairy lights twinkling.

Honestly, the arrival kerfuffle made the whole stay sweeter – turned mishaps into memories. If you’re after a luxe base amid Cornwall’s coastal magic, without the faff of far-flung drives, this is it. Already plotting a return.
