About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Par – that classic Cornish road trip where you’re buzzing with excitement, windows down, pasty in hand, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. We’d left early from Devon, kids chattering about rock pools and ice creams, but then bam – a tractor the size of a house trundling along at snail pace. Half an hour later, we’re laughing about it, pulling up to this gorgeous first-floor apartment tucked into an old house right in the heart of the village. From the off, it felt like home: light streaming in, cosy setup perfect for us as a little family, with off-road parking that meant no faffing about with street spaces. I could already smell the sea air wafting up from the beach just moments away.

Stepping inside, my heart did that little flip of pure relief – after the drive’s mini-drama, this was the unwind we’d been craving. It’s one of those thoughtfully designed spots for couples or small families like ours, all flair and comfort without being fussy. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa, and just soaked it in. The kids immediately claimed the sofa for a bounce-around session, while I gazed out at the village stirring to life below. First impressions? Spot on. It’s the kind of place that whispers ‘relax’ from every corner.

Our days slipped into that dreamy Cornish rhythm – mornings kicking off with a short stroll to the beach at Par, where the tide pools were a treasure hunt for crabs and shells. The little ones squealed with delight, getting sopping wet in seconds, while we parents pretended not to notice the sand creeping into every crevice. Lunch was fish and chips from the harbour, eaten on a bench overlooking the waves, with seagulls eyeing us cheekily. Afternoons meant ambling through the village, popping into the bakery for cream slices that were still warm, or a gentle wander along the coastal path towards Polkerris – close enough for a dip in the sea, but never too far to lug tired legs back.

Evenings were pure cottage chaos bliss: cooking up a storm in the well-kitted kitchen (pasta sauce splatters and all), board games that descended into giggles, and collapsing in front of a film with blankets piled high. One night, the kids conked out early, and I sat there with a glass of wine, listening to the distant waves, reflecting on how these simple moments – the messy joy of family downtime – are what recharge the batteries. No grand plans, just us, the sea breeze, and that laid-back Cornish charm wrapping around like a hug.

Par’s got this unpretentious magic – friendly locals nodding hello, the pub just down the road for a pint if we fancied, and everything you need without the tourist crush. It wasn’t all Instagram-perfect; there was the time the youngest smeared jam everywhere, turning cleanup into a comedy of errors. But that’s the beauty of it – real, relaxed family life amid the simple pleasures. We left with sandy shoes, full hearts, and already plotting a return. Cornwall, you’ve got us hooked.
