About Cornwall
I finally made it to Newquay after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. The sat-nav had a right cheeky moment, directing me onto a narrow lane that turned out to be more pothole than road, and I spent a good 20 minutes reversing into a hedge to let a tractor past. Still, as I crested the hill and caught my first glimpse of the sea sparkling under the Cornish sun, all that stress melted away. I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you're already imagining your first pasty and pint.

Pulling up to the place, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those clever reverse-level holiday homes, all bright and stylish inside, tucked away in the bustle of Newquay but just a cheeky stroll from a decent pub, a corner shop, and the golden sands of Porth Beach. The ground floor has two cracking bedrooms, each with their own Smart TV, wardrobes, and those blackout blinds that make mornings optional. They zip together as super-kings or split into twins, perfect for whoever you're with. From the off, it felt like a proper cheerful retreat – comfy, a bit luxurious even, with sneaky sea views that made me grin like an idiot.

But honestly, the joy of the whole trip was doing sod all. After months of rushing about at work, this was my chance to switch off completely. The first morning, I cracked open the bifold doors to the garden – a lush little haven with that salty sea air wafting in – and plonked myself down with a cuppa and a dog-eared paperback. No agenda, no alarms. Just the sound of gulls squawking and waves rumbling in the distance. I spent hours there, feet up, losing myself in the story while the sun climbed higher. Lunch was a lazy faff in the kitchen – nothing fancy, just cheese on toast from the shop down the road – eaten outside as I watched families traipse off to the beach.

Afternoons blurred into the same blissful rhythm. A gentle wander to Porth Beach for a paddle in the shallows, toes sinking into the sand, then back for more garden lounging. One day I even managed a nap on the outdoor bench, waking up to the faint hum of Newquay's vibe – surfers yelling, kids laughing – without feeling the pull to join in. It was pure indulgence, that slow Cornish pace. Evenings meant firing up the barbecue for sausages and a cold beer from the pub, all while the sky turned that impossible pink over the sea.

Looking back, I realise I needed this more than I thought. Us city folk get so wound up, don't we? Chasing the next thing, scrolling endlessly. Here, in this unhurried spot, I properly unwound – recharging without a single to-do list in sight. If you're after a family getaway or mates' escape where the highlight is savouring the quiet, this is it. Cornwall does that magic best: turning nowt into nowt short of brilliant. Can't wait to go back and do even less.
