About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Mevagissey – that classic Cornish jaunt from the motorway, winding through hedges thick with wildflowers, only for us to hit a cheeky traffic jam just past St Austell. Turned out some sheep had decided the road was their personal picnic spot, and there we were, drumming fingers on the steering wheel, fantasising about pasties. But honestly, it just built the anticipation – by the time we crested the hill and spotted the twinkling harbour lights, we were proper buzzing.

Pulling up to our one-bedroom luxury apartment right in the heart of this quintessentially Cornish fishing village, just a stone’s throw from the boats bobbing in the water, my first impressions were spot on. It’s the sort of place that screams romantic getaway – sleek, glossy kitchen with bright white units and all the gadgets you could wish for, plus that massive corner sofa begging for a post-dinner slump. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local rosé from the offie down the lane, toasting to no more driving.

Food became our mission from the off. First morning, I fancied playing chef in that brilliant kitchen – oven mitts on, attempting a full English with sausages nabbed from the village market. Mevagissey’s got this cracking little market on the quay most days, stalls groaning under fresh crab, plump mackerel straight off the boats, and veg so vibrant it practically winks at you. My fry-up? Let’s just say the bacon was crispy perfection, but the eggs turned into a bit of a scramble – literally. Hubby laughed it off over tea, calling it “rustic charm,” which is code for “don’t quit your day job, love.”

We wandered to The Lifeboat Inn for lunch, a proper harbourside pub where the fish and chips arrive golden and steaming, battered hake flaking at the touch with mushy peas that hit just right. Sat outside watching gulls swoop, we demolished it with a pint of Tribute ale, chatting about nothing much. Evenings were for experimenting back at the flat – I whipped up a seafood linguine one night, hurling in prawns and clams from the fishmonger two doors down. The induction hob made it a doddle, though I did nearly set off the smoke alarm juggling garlic. Tasted divine, mind, washed down with cider from a nearby farm shop.

Another highlight was The Shark’s Fin, a cosy spot for crab sandwiches so fresh you feel the tide in every bite. We timed it with the market again, grabbing cheeses and bread for a picnic on the harbour wall – simple, sunny, and utterly satisfying. One rainy afternoon, we hunkered on that huge sofa, TV flickering with some cooking show for inspiration, munching takeaways from the chippy. Reflecting on it now, amid the rush of daily life, those meals weren’t just fuel – they were the holiday’s heartbeat, turning strangers into mates over shared plates and daft kitchen disasters. Mevagissey’s food scene fed our souls as much as our bellies, and I’m already plotting a return for more.
