About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Par in Cornwall – our little family hatchback groaning under the weight of cool boxes, beach toys, and enough snacks to feed a small army. We’d set off from Bristol full of beans, kids buzzing in the back with their iPads, me and the wife belting out old pop tunes. But about an hour in, disaster struck: a rogue seagull dive-bombed our windscreen, leaving a splatter that turned the M5 into a horror film. We pulled over at a services for a frantic clean-up, kids giggling hysterically while I muttered about my luck with birds. By the time we hit the twisty Cornish lanes, we were late, windswept, and starving – but the anticipation was building. Par’s just that perfect spot, isn’t it? Close enough to the action but tucked away for proper downtime.

Pulling up to our holiday spot, I let out a massive sigh of relief. It’s one of those stylish studio hideaways – part of a posh little collection of four unique one-bedroom apartments, each done up with real flair by some clever interior designer. Ours was up on the first floor of a converted loft, light pouring in everywhere, clearly made for couples but working a treat for us with the little ones. Private parking right outside meant no faffing about with street spaces, and it was literally a stone’s throw from the beach. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bag of crisps, and just breathed it all in – that salty sea air hitting you like a welcome hug.

The next few days blurred into proper cottage life chaos, the best kind. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the balcony, watching fishing boats bob in Par Harbour, then a five-minute wander to the sandy stretch at Par Beach. The kids went feral building sandcastles while we parents flopped on towels, sipping thermos coffee and pretending we weren’t knackered from the night before. One afternoon, we ambled over to the harbour for fish and chips wrapped in paper – greasy, perfect, eaten on a bench with gulls eyeing us up hopefully. No five-star fuss, just simple joys like that.

We kept it local, pottering around the village’s charm – popping into the quirky shops for pasties and fudge, or a gentle stroll along the coastal path towards Polkerris Beach, about a mile up. The sea was that crisp turquoise, waves gentle enough for paddling without anyone getting swept off. Evenings were golden: back at the apartment, firing up the hob for a pasta throw-together (kids demanding seconds), then collapsing on the sofa with a board game that descended into tickle fights and laughter till bedtime.

There was this one quiet moment, staring out at the sunset from the window, kids finally conked out. I caught myself thinking, blimey, when did we last switch off like this? Work emails forgotten, no schedules – just us, the sea, and a bit of lovely disorder. It’s funny how a place like this nudges you to pause. We left with sandy shoes, full bellies, and plans to come back. Cornwall does that to you – wraps you up in its messy magic and doesn’t let go.
