About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Looe – that classic Cornish road trip where the satnav decides to play silly buggers right when you hit the twisty lanes. We’d left Bristol at dawn, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, dreaming of pasties and sea views, only for the heavens to open just past Plymouth. Rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then – bang – a puncture on a narrow bend near Polperro. Me, swearing under my breath (well, not too much), jacking up the car while my other half held the umbrella and laughed. Took us an hour to sort with the AA, but by the time we rolled into Looe, we were soaked, starving, and strangely exhilarated. That’s holidays for you, innit? Turns mishaps into stories.

Pulling up to the property, though, all that chaos melted away. It’s one of those cosy seaside cottages, perched with killer views over the harbour – whitewashed and quaint, the sort that screams “welcome home” even if you’ve only just arrived. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and there it was: the door key under the mat as promised, and stepping inside felt like a hug. Fresh scones on the kitchen table (cheers, hosts!), and those massive windows framing the boats bobbing in the bay. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – I mean, ace. We dumped our stuff and cracked open a bottle of local Rattler cider on the terrace, watching gulls swoop and the tide roll in. The chaos of the drive? Forgotten already.

That first afternoon set the tone perfectly. We wandered down the hill – five minutes to the beach – dodging the puddles but grinning like idiots. Looe’s East Looe Beach was calling, with its soft sand and families building epic sandcastles. I paddled in the shallows, freezing my toes off, while we scoffed fish and chips from the beach kiosk, vinegar dripping everywhere. Proper Cornwall magic. Later, we mooched along the harbour wall, spotting seals popping up like cheeky locals, and nipped into a tiny pasty shop for seconds. Back at the cottage, sunset turned the sea all pink and gold – we just sat there, feet up, reflecting on how daft it was to stress about punctures when this was waiting.

Mind you, I had a proper moment of self-reflection that evening, staring out at the waves. Work’s been manic lately, me buried in spreadsheets, forgetting to breathe. Here I was, no signal half the time, just the sound of the sea and a full belly. Made me think: why don’t I do this more? Book a little retreat like this, ditch the drama, and let Cornwall work its charm. Next morning, we tackled the coastal path to Hannafore – gentle stroll with views that knock your socks off, spotting fishing boats and maybe a dolphin if you’re lucky. Picked up crab sandwiches from the quay, devoured them on the rocks.

Honestly, that arrival kerfuffle made the whole stay sweeter – turned us into proper adventurers. If you’re after a bolt-hole that feels like your own slice of Cornwall, this corner of Looe’s the ticket. Can’t wait to go back.
