About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Carbis Bay last month—it was one of those classic Cornish summer jaunts that started with high hopes and a minor disaster. We’d piled into the car from Bristol early doors, kids buzzing in the back with pasties from a service station, me navigating via a dodgy app that suddenly lost signal just past Launceston. Cue the small mishap: a wrong turn onto a narrow lane that had us wedged behind a tractor for what felt like hours, the driver giving us a cheery wave as if it were all part of the fun. By the time we rolled into Valley Road, hearts racing a bit, I was proper knackered but dead excited. What if the views weren’t as promised? Silly worry—that first glimpse from the car park had us all gasping.

Pulling up to this luxury apartment, right near St Ives Road, it was love at first sight. A sleek, family-friendly spot sleeping six in three comfy bedrooms, with that open-plan living area dominated by a massive wall of windows. And blimey, the panoramic outlook across St Ives Bay? Straight out of a postcard, stretching to Godrevy lighthouse and Gwithian’s golden sands. Summer’s magic was everywhere—the sea sparkling under a proper blue sky, gulls wheeling about, and that warm breeze carrying the scent of salt and sunscreen. It’s just a hop on the bus to St Ives or a gentle wander down the valley to Carbis Bay’s Blue Flag beach, but honestly, we barely wanted to leave.

The season shaped every minute. Mornings kicked off with brekkie at the dining table, coffee in hand, watching surfers dot the bay like seals in wetsuits. Midday, we’d stroll to the beach, toes sinking into sun-warmed sand, building epic castles that the incoming tide would claim with a cheeky swirl. One afternoon, I tried bodyboarding—ha, picture me, a 40-something dad flailing like a beached whale while the kids whooped from the shallows. Light humour there: I emerged looking like a drowned rat, but it was brilliant family bonding, the summer sun drying us off in no time.

Evenings were pure gold. We’d fire up a barbecue on the balcony (handy little perk), munching fresh mackerel from a local stall, the sunset painting the lighthouse in pinks and oranges. St Ives felt alive with buskers and ice cream queues, but coming back to our hideaway was the best bit—cosy evenings with board games as the day’s heat faded into a balmy dusk. No chilly winds or midges to spoil it; just that endless summer vibe making everything feel timeless.

Looking back, that week was a gentle nudge to slow down. In the rush of daily life, I forget how a place like this, wrapped in Cornwall’s peak-season glow, recharges the soul. The kids made mates on the beach, we all unplugged, and those sea views? They’ll linger forever. If you’re chasing that perfect family escape, Carbis Bay in summer delivers in spades. Can’t wait to go back.
