About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Bodmin last autumn – the leaves were turning that glorious mix of gold and rust, carpeting the A30 like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the family piled into the car from up country, kids buzzing with excitement about pasties and beaches, but about halfway through Devon, disaster struck: a sneaky puncture from what I reckon was a rogue hazelnut. We limped into a layby, hearts sinking as the rain started spitting on the windscreen, turning what should’ve been a two-hour jaunt into a three-hour faff with the spare tyre. Still, by the time we rolled into Cornwall proper, the hedges were dripping with blackberries, and that crisp October air had me grinning – proper seasonal magic, even if my hands were freezing from the wheel.

Pulling up to our spot on a quiet residential street near Bodmin town centre, anticipation was sky-high. We’d been dreaming of cosy firesides and misty walks, and as we unloaded, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. This stylish apartment, converted from a historic granite building, felt like it was made for autumn in Cornwall – close enough to everything yet tucked away in that serene calm you crave when the summer crowds have scarpered. Trip Reporter had raved about its peaceful vibe and spot-on setup for a family break, and blimey, they weren’t wrong. Up the granite steps (with a handy stairgate for the little ones), two flights led to a contemporary haven: two bedrooms, a family bathroom, and an open-plan living area that just screamed relaxation.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, wrapping it all in that golden-hour glow. Mornings started with steaming mugs of tea on the sofa, watching leaves swirl past the window while the wood burner crackled away – pure bliss after the drive’s drama. We’d wander into Bodmin’s market, stocking up on seasonal squashes and cider from local stalls, the air thick with that earthy, damp scent that only Cornwall nails in October. One afternoon, we hiked Priory Woods, the woods alive with fungi popping up like hidden treasures, and the kids went mad collecting conkers underfoot. Laughter echoed as we slipped on wet leaves – me included, ending up flat on my bum, which had everyone in stitches. Selfishly, it was a nudge to slow down; work had been manic, and those quiet moments, crunching through the undergrowth with family, reminded me why unplugging matters.

Evenings were for hearty stews simmered in the well-equipped kitchen, using spuds from the nearby Priory Park veg plot we’d nipped to. The sloped ceilings gave it that intimate, storybook feel, perfect for board games as rain pattered outside. A quick stroll to the centre meant cream teas at a café (jam first, obviously), with the town’s autumn lights twinkling early against the shortening days. No heaving beaches needed; Bodmin’s parks and paths, all within easy reach, delivered that crisp, invigorating Cornish autumn we’d hoped for – misty mornings burning off into sunny spells, with the scent of woodsmoke everywhere.

Looking back, that puncture was a blessing in disguise – it made arriving feel like coming home. Cornwall in autumn? It’s underrated gold, especially from a bolthole like this. We left refreshed, already plotting a return when the leaves turn next year.
