About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Camborne last autumn – the leaves were turning that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the verges along the A30 like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and my partner had been buzzing with anticipation for weeks, dreaming of cosy evenings by the sea as the days grew shorter and that crisp Cornish chill set in. But typical me, I took a wrong turn just past Redruth, ending up in some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel while pheasants scarpered out of the hedges. A good half-hour detour later, we rolled up laughing, hearts racing a bit, but the golden afternoon light filtering through the trees made it all feel like part of the adventure.

Pulling into the off-road parking spot – complete with an electric charger that saved my EV’s battery – we were instantly smitten. This compact duplex apartment is bijou in the best way, tucked right in the heart of Camborne, perfect for a couple like us seeking that intimate autumn escape. Stepping inside, the open-plan living space wrapped us in instant warmth: a little corner kitchen with its mini fridge, two-ring hob and oven, a small table for two, and a smart TV ready for bingeing while the wind picked up outside. It’s all so snug, you feel like you’ve stepped into a hug.

Autumn in Cornwall is magic, isn’t it? The season shaped every moment of our stay. Mornings started with steaming mugs of tea at that tiny table, watching mist roll in from the coast just a short stroll away – we nipped down to Camborne’s beaches, where the waves crashed dramatically under slate-grey skies, and the sand was littered with driftwood perfect for beachcombing. No summer crowds, just us and a few dog-walkers, kicking through crunchy leaves on the cliffs. One afternoon, we wandered to the nearby Reckord’s Pasty Shop for a steaming beef pasty, its pastry flaking in the chill breeze – proper fuel for the soul when the days clip short by 4pm.

Evenings were the real treat, thanks to that seasonal shift. As dusk fell early, we’d rustle up simple suppers on the hob – think creamy pumpkin soup from local veg, or baked spuds topped with cheese from the Camborne market. Curled up with blankets (we brought extras, cheekily), we flicked on the TV for episodes of Strictly, the rain pattering on the windows like a gentle lullaby. One night, a proper gale howled, and I had a little moment of reflection: sat there, mug in hand, thinking how this bijou bolthole had turned what could’ve been a soggy week into pure contentment. Me, who usually frets about space, realised smaller can be brilliant – it forced us to slow down, chat properly, and just be.

We even charged the car overnight and zipped to Penzance’s harbour one misty morning, five minutes up the road, for fresh crab straight from the boats – autumn’s bounty at its finest. No heaving tourist throngs, just the salty tang in the air and seals barking offshore. By the time we packed up, reluctantly, the trees were shedding their coats faster, but we left with batteries recharged, stomachs full, and a promise to return next leaf-fall. Cornwall in autumn? It’s not just a holiday; it’s a reset button wrapped in sea mist.
