Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol. We'd set off bright and early, me at the wheel with my mate Dave shotgun, kids in the back buzzing with excitement about pasties and beaches. But no, about halfway through Devon, the satnav decided to throw a proper wobbly—rerouting us down some tiny lane that was basically a goat track. We ended up stuck behind a tractor for what seemed like hours, with the kids chanting "Are we there yet?" on loop. I was sweating bullets, convinced we'd miss check-in, and Dave's endless jokes about my "shortcut skills" weren't helping. Then, to top it off, I took a wrong turn into Looe and nearly ended up in the harbour—heart in my mouth as I reversed out of a dead end with fishing boats glaring at me.

By the time we pulled up to the cottage, I was frazzled, but honestly, that anticipation I'd built up all week—dreaming of salty sea air and no emails—made the relief massive. It's this cosy little terraced spot tucked into a quiet row just a stone's throw from Looe, all quaint and welcoming with its classic Cornish charm. The moment we tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, the owner popped out with a massive grin and a pot of tea on the go. First impressions? Bloody brilliant—no, hang on, absolutely spot-on. The place just hugs you: sea views peeking through the windows, everything spotless and ready for us to flop into.

We dumped the bags and legged it straight down to the beach—Hannafore Beach, right on the doorstep, with its pebbly shores and waves crashing like they were putting on a show just for us. The kids were off building sandcastles in seconds, while Dave and I cracked open some local cider from the nearby shop. That first evening, we wandered into Looe proper, just a quick stroll away, grabbing fish and chips wrapped in paper from a stall that smelled like heaven. Sat on the harbour wall watching the boats bob, gulls squawking overhead—it was pure magic after the road rage.

Looking back, that mishap-filled journey was probably a good thing; it made arriving feel like winning the lottery. I caught myself later that night, pint in hand on the cottage patio, thinking how I never slow down at home. Here, with the tide rolling in and no rush, it was a gentle nudge to just breathe. We spent the next days pottering—kayaking in the bay, poking around rock pools for crabs, even a cheeky pasty picnic up at the cliffs overlooking the sea. One kid found a massive whelk shell, declaring it treasure, and I couldn't stop smiling. Looe's that perfect pocket of Cornwall: buzzing enough for ice cream vans and seafood shacks, quiet enough to hear the waves at night.

If you're after a holiday that sorts your soul without the faff, this is it. Messy start and all, we'd book again in a heartbeat.
