Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to west Cornwall last autumn – the leaves turning that gorgeous coppery gold along the A30, but oh, what a faff when we got a puncture just past Bodmin. There we were, me and the other half, faffing about with the spare tyre in the drizzle, feeling like proper amateurs while lorries thundered past. Still, it added a bit of drama to the anticipation, you know? By the time we rolled into the quiet spot near Ludgvan, the low October sun was dipping towards the sea, painting everything in that soft, hazy light that makes you think, “Yeah, this was worth the hassle.”

Within easy reach of St Michael’s Mount and just a few miles away from the market town of Penzance, it provided a wonderful base from which to explore the coastline and attractions of west Cornwall. We’d booked this cosy barn conversion, all snug and welcoming with its rustic charm – perfect for cosying up as the season turned properly autumnal. First impressions? Magic. Stepping inside, the wood-burner was already flickering away (bless the hosts), and from the garden, you could just glimpse the Mount rising out of the bay like some mythical island, its silhouette sharpening against the fiery sunset. I stood there with a cuppa, heart lifting, thinking how the cooler days make these spots feel even more special.

Autumn really shaped the whole trip, turning what could’ve been a standard holiday into something properly atmospheric. Mornings started misty, with that crisp edge to the air that demands a proper fry-up before heading out. We wandered the coastal path to Marazion – only a short drive away – where the tide was out, exposing acres of glistening sand. No summer crowds, just us and a few dog-walkers, crunching through fallen leaves while gulls wheeled overhead. The Mount looked ethereal, half-shrouded in sea fret one minute, then blazing in rare bursts of sun the next. I had a right giggle slipping on wet seaweed, ending up arse-over-tit in a rockpool – classic me, always the clown.

Afternoons were for Penzance market, where the stalls overflowed with seasonal treats: fat pumpkins, spiced apple cakes, and jars of blackberry jam that tasted like hedgerows distilled. The chill wind off the Atlantic made hot pasties from the bakery an absolute godsend – steaming chunks of beef and swede, eaten on a bench overlooking the harbour, watching fishing boats bob in the swell. Evenings back at the barn were pure bliss, wrapped in blankets with mulled cider, listening to the wind rustle the trees. One night, we caught a proper Cornish sunset from the garden – oranges and purples bleeding into the sea – and I got a bit reflective, you know? Sat there thinking how autumn strips things back, makes you appreciate the simple stuff: good company, warming fires, and that raw, bracing beauty of the coast without the tourist scrum.

We didn’t venture far – no need when everything’s on your doorstep – and the season’s moody weather kept us flexible, dodging showers with pub stops in Mousehole or beachcombing at Prussia Cove. It was one of those holidays that lingers, reminding you why Cornwall in autumn is underrated gold. If you’re after that cosy, windswept vibe, get yourself down there before the clocks go back.
