About Cornwall
Inside, the place felt instantly like home—low ceilings, a wonky wooden floor that creaked under every step, and a kitchen window that framed the harbour like a postcard. We dumped our bags, made a quick cuppa, and stepped straight back out, promising ourselves we’d “just have a wander” before unpacking properly. That wander turned into the real story of the weekend. Instead of heading straight to the obvious beach path, we took a narrow lane that looked like it led nowhere. Five minutes later we were climbing a steep, tree-lined track that opened onto a tiny, almost hidden cove we’d never heard of. No ice-cream vans, no rows of stripy deckchairs—just a handful of locals with dogs and a rope swing dangling from an old oak. We spent the next hour skimming stones and watching the tide creep in, the sort of spot you only stumble across when you’re properly lost. Later that afternoon, still following our noses, we ducked down another side street and found ourselves in a tiny community garden we’d have missed completely if we hadn’t taken a wrong turn. Someone had left a honesty box of home-grown tomatoes on a bench; we dropped a couple of coins in and carried on, munching as we went. By evening we’d circled back to the cottage with sandy shoes, pockets full of shells, and the satisfied feeling that comes from discovering places that weren’t on any map we’d studied beforehand. Looking back, that first-day mishap with the satnav turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. Without it we might have stuck to the obvious routes and missed the quiet corners that made the trip feel properly ours. |
