About Cornwall
We set off from the A39 with the satnav confidently promising “five minutes,” which naturally turned into twenty after I took the wrong turning at a farm gate and ended up nose-to-nose with a rather unimpressed sheep. By the time we bumped down the final track and caught our first glimpse of the whitewashed cottage, the sun was already high and the sea was glittering just beyond the low hedge.

The front door stuck slightly—classic Cornish charm—and the key turned with that satisfying clunk that says you’ve truly arrived. Inside, the rooms felt instantly welcoming: a low-beamed living room with squashy sofas, a kitchen that smelled faintly of last night’s bread, and upstairs three simple bedrooms already made up with crisp linen. We dumped the bags, kicked off our shoes, and stepped straight out again, drawn by the short path that leads between brambles and wildflowers straight onto the beach.

Poundstock’s stretch of sand is the sort that invites doing absolutely nothing at all. We spread an old blanket just above the tideline, cracked open a packet of biscuits we’d meant to save for later, and watched the waves roll in. The only plan for the afternoon was to finish the books we’d brought and maybe have a doze. I managed three chapters before the warmth and the sound of gulls lulled me into that half-asleep state where time stops mattering. My partner, meanwhile, had already abandoned reading altogether in favour of collecting oddly shaped pebbles “for the mantelpiece back home,” though we both knew they’d probably stay in a coat pocket until next Christmas.

Later we wandered back to the cottage for tea, leaving the door wide open so the salty breeze could wander through. The garden’s little bench caught the last of the sun, and we sat there with steaming mugs, listening to nothing more urgent than the distant wash of the sea. I caught myself thinking how rare it feels these days to have whole hours with no agenda—no trains to catch, no screens pinging, just the slow rhythm of tide and light. It struck me, gently, that maybe the real luxury of a place like this isn’t the cottage itself but the permission it quietly gives you to stop rushing.

By evening the sky had turned that soft peach colour Cornwall does so well. We carried fish and chips down to the sand, ate them straight from the paper, and stayed until the first stars appeared. The mishap with the satnav already felt like ancient history; all that mattered now was the quiet certainty that tomorrow could be exactly the same—another lazy stretch of beach, another book left half-read, another day happily misspent in the sunshine.
