We set off for the 4 Bed Cottage in Fowey with the sort of over-optimistic satnav faith that usually ends in mild disaster, and sure enough it did. Halfway down a lane so narrow the brambles were practically hitching a lift on the wing mirrors, the voice cheerfully announced we’d “reached our destination,” which was, in fact, a muddy farm track with no cottage in sight. After a ten-minute reverse that felt more like a three-point turn in a submarine, we finally pulled up outside the whitewashed stone house, its slate roof still glistening from the morning’s rain.

The first thing that struck me was how the place seemed to fold into the hillside rather than sit on it. From the little gravel parking spot you could already hear the sea, not the dramatic roar you get at big beaches, but the steady hush that tells you it’s just around the next bend. Inside, the cottage smelled faintly of woodsmoke and fresh bread—someone had left a loaf cooling on the side, a small touch that made the whole kitchen feel borrowed rather than rented.

We’d planned to unpack straight away, but the light was doing that late-afternoon thing where everything looks slightly magical, so we grabbed jackets and wandered instead. A footpath we hadn’t noticed on the map led straight from the back garden, squeezing between two high hedges before opening onto a tiny cove we’d never heard of. There wasn’t a single other person, just a strip of pale sand, a couple of fishing buoys, and a wooden bench someone had clearly dragged down years ago and never bothered to move back up. We sat there until our fingers went numb, watching a cormorant dive for its tea.

Later, still mildly lost, we followed another unmarked track that climbed behind the cottage and delivered us to a viewpoint no bigger than a picnic blanket. From there Fowey itself looked like a toy town someone had arranged along the river for their own amusement. A fishing boat puttered out towards the headland, its wake catching the last of the sun, and for a moment I felt oddly grateful that our satnav had been so spectacularly wrong.

Back at the cottage the kettle whistled and the windows had started to steam up. I realised I hadn’t checked a single email since we’d arrived, and more surprisingly, hadn’t wanted to. Sometimes getting properly lost is the only way to find the bits of a place that actually stick with you.
