About Cornwall
The path hugs the shoreline with proper Cornish drama—steep drops one minute, wide grassy stretches the next—and we were soon puffing happily along, stopping every few minutes to gawp at the view. Whitsand Bay stretched out below us in that impossible turquoise you only seem to get when the sun decides to behave, and the breeze kept everything feeling fresh rather than sticky. We’d aimed to reach a little cove we’d spotted on the map, but after an hour the clouds started to gather like they’d been summoned, turning the sky that familiar moody grey that says “not today, thanks.” Instead of pushing on and getting soaked, we ducked into a sheltered dip in the cliffs and watched the weather roll through, laughing at how quickly our grand hike had turned into an impromptu picnic on a handy rock. By the time the rain eased we were both a bit damp and very ready for tea, so we wandered back the way we’d come, taking it slower and noticing all the little things we’d missed on the outward leg—tiny wildflowers tucked into the stone walls, a kestrel hovering over the fields, and the way the light changed every time the sun poked through. Back at the cottage the kettle went on straight away, and we sat by the window with steaming mugs, watching the last of the clouds scud out to sea. It struck me, watching the waves settle again, how often our best bits of a holiday happen when the weather throws a small spanner in the works; we’d set out for miles and ended up with something gentler and, in its own way, just as memorable. |
