About Cornwall
We’d only just turned off the main road towards Newquay when the sat-nav decided we’d reached our destination in the middle of a roundabout. After three circuits and a lot of bickering about who’d typed in the postcode, we finally spotted the little sign for An Drowes tucked down a narrow lane. The cottage itself looked exactly like the photos—whitewashed walls, slate roof, and a bright blue door that practically dared us to unpack in a hurry.

Our first afternoon was meant to be an easy stroll along the coastal path towards Fistral Beach, but the weather had other ideas. One minute we were striding along in T-shirts, the next a sudden Atlantic squall sent us scrambling into a sheltered dip in the dunes, laughing as we tried to share one slightly-too-small waterproof between us. By the time the sun reappeared we’d abandoned any grand plans and simply followed our noses along the cliff edge, stopping every few minutes to watch the surfers bobbing like seals below.

The path from the cottage gate leads straight onto the South West Coast Path, so we didn’t even need the car again that day. We wandered as far as the headland overlooking Newquay Bay, where the breeze carried the smell of hot pasties from a nearby kiosk. Stopping for an early tea seemed the sensible thing to do—especially when the clouds started to gather again. We sat on a bench watching families build sandcastles that the tide was already threatening, and I found myself thinking how quickly we’d swapped our “proper hike” ambitions for something gentler and far more Cornish.

Back at An Drowes that evening, sandy feet on the doormat and damp jackets draped over the radiator, I caught myself smiling at how little the day had matched our original plan. The cottage’s little garden caught the last of the light, and the sound of waves drifted in through the open window. It struck me that maybe the best part of a beach holiday isn’t ticking off miles, but letting the weather and the coastline decide what happens next.
