About Cornwall
The cottage sat just across the road from Carbis Bay beach, a short scramble down a sandy path that the children had already spotted. We tumbled out stiff-legged, the youngest immediately kicking off shoes to test the temperature of the tarmac with bare feet. The front door key was exactly where the owner had promised, under a cheerful pot of lavender, and the first thing that hit us inside was the faint scent of woodsmoke and yesterday’s toast—someone else’s happy week lingering in the air. We left the unpacking for later and wandered straight onto the sand while there was still light. The tide was on its way out, leaving long glassy stretches perfect for finding tiny shells and the odd bit of driftwood shaped like a wonky walking stick. My partner claimed the best bit of beach was “just over there,” which turned into a ten-minute stroll that ended with us all sitting on a low wall eating chips from paper cones, watching a cormorant dive for its own supper. Back at the cottage the kettle whistled on the little electric hob while we claimed beds and argued, good-naturedly, over who got the room with the sea glimpse. I ended up with the top bunk in the kids’ room after losing a round of rock-paper-scissors, and lay there listening to the faint hush of waves through the open window. It struck me, not for the first time, how quickly the usual rush of life slips away once you’re this close to the water. That first evening we ate simply—bread, cheese, tomatoes from the market in St Ives—and then stepped outside again to watch the sky turn peach over the bay. A dog ran joyful circles at the shoreline, its owner laughing as it refused to come back for the ball. Standing there, still in the clothes I’d driven in, I felt the small, familiar tug of wanting the week to stretch just a little longer already. |
