We set off from the A38 just after lunch, the boot stuffed with wellies and the sort of optimism that only a last-minute October half-term can conjure. The sat-nav cheerfully announced we’d arrive by three, which would have been spot-on if I hadn’t taken the “scenic” detour through a single-track lane that ended abruptly at a five-bar gate. Cue fifteen minutes of reversing past an increasingly unimpressed herd of cows while my other half reminded me, loudly, that we were on holiday.

By the time we finally reached Bayview the light had already softened into that gentle, late-autumn gold Cornwall does so well. The cottage sat just above the shingle at Portwrinkle, its windows catching the low sun and the sea looking almost metallic. A sharp breeze carried the clean, salty smell straight up the lane, and I felt the week’s city tension loosen a notch or two.

Inside, the heating had been left on low, so the place felt properly welcoming rather than chilly and damp. We dumped bags in the little bedroom that overlooks the water, then wandered straight back out because the tide was perfect for a stroll. The beach was almost empty; just a couple walking their collie and a dad teaching his kids to skim stones. October meant the summer crowds had long gone, yet the air still held enough warmth for us to sit on the low wall with takeaway pasties from the village shop without our fingers going numb.

Later, while the kettle boiled, I caught myself watching the light slide off the cliffs and realised how rarely I simply stop and notice the sky change colour. The season had done that for us—slowed everything down without us even asking. Supper was fish and chips eaten at the scrubbed pine table, the windows steamed up and the sound of waves just audible beneath the radio. No frantic itinerary, no rush to tick things off; just the quiet satisfaction of being somewhere that felt properly ours for a few days.
