About Cornwall
We’d been on the road for nearly six hours when the sat-nav decided to test our patience, sending us down a single-track lane that ended in somebody’s driveway. After a polite u-turn and a few choice words, we finally rolled into Newquay with the sun already low over the sea. The last stretch to Blue Bay Beach House was mercifully short; we pulled up outside a neat white cottage tucked just back from the dunes, its windows glowing softly in the dusk.

Stepping out, the first thing that hit me was the smell—salt, seaweed, and that unmistakable Cornish breeze that feels like it’s been travelling straight off the Atlantic. My shoulders dropped a notch. We fumbled with the key safe for a moment, then the door swung open to a warm hallway lined with framed prints of local beaches. The living room felt instantly welcoming: squashy sofas, a wood-burner ready for colder nights, and a big window framing a slice of darkening ocean.

After dumping bags we wandered straight out again, shoes kicked off on the short path to the sand. The tide was out, leaving a wide, damp stretch perfect for an aimless stroll. I found myself laughing at how quickly the journey stress had melted away; one minute we were arguing about roundabouts, the next we were collecting tiny shells like a pair of kids. Back at the cottage the kitchen greeted us with a well-stocked welcome tray—tea, coffee, and a note from the owners suggesting the best pasty shop within walking distance.

We didn’t venture far that first evening. Instead we sat on the little deck with fish and chips from town, watching the sky fade from pink to navy. The faint sound of waves carried over the dunes, and for once neither of us reached for our phones. I caught myself thinking how rare it is to feel properly arrived somewhere the moment you step inside. Maybe that’s what a proper Cornish beach house does—lets you leave the long drive behind before you’ve even unpacked.
