We’d been on the road since half-six, crawling through endless roadworks on the A30, and by the time we finally swung off onto the little lanes near St Ives my patience was hanging by a thread. The satnav, bless it, decided this was the perfect moment to reroute us down what looked like someone’s driveway, so there we were, reversing into a hedge while a tractor waited patiently behind us. By the time we pulled up outside Boscarne I was convinced the cottage would be a let-down, but the moment I stepped out and caught that first whiff of salt air I felt the tension start to ease.

The place sits just back from the dunes, a short stroll from the beach path, and even in the late afternoon light it looked exactly like the photos—whitewashed walls, slate roof, and a little wooden gate that squeaked in a friendly way. We fumbled with the key safe for a minute (my fault for writing the code down wrong), but once inside the warmth hit us straight away. Someone had left the heating on low and there was a note on the table wishing us a lovely stay, which felt oddly touching after hours of traffic and that ridiculous hedge incident.

I dropped my bag in the bedroom and wandered straight through to the kitchen, where a big window looked out over scrubby grass towards the sea. The tide was out, leaving long ripples of wet sand, and I stood there longer than I meant to, just watching the light change. It struck me then how rarely I actually stop when I arrive somewhere; usually I’m too busy unpacking or checking work emails to notice what’s right in front of me.

We didn’t do much that first evening—just a quick unpack, a cup of tea, and a short wander down to the beach before it got dark. The sand was cool underfoot and the waves sounded softer than I remembered from childhood trips. Standing there, shoes in hand, I realised the journey had been worth it, hedge and all. Sometimes the best part of a holiday is simply arriving and letting the place do the rest.
