We’d been on the road since half past six that morning, the M5 stretching out like it had a personal vendetta against us, and by the time we finally turned off towards Penzance the car was thick with the smell of lukewarm pasties and one very overexcited spaniel. I was convinced I knew the last stretch like the back of my hand, until the satnav cheerfully announced we’d arrived while we were still staring at a field of cabbages. A quick three-point turn in someone’s driveway later—complete with a neighbourly wave that felt more like pity than politeness—and we were bumping down the narrow lane to Broadlands.

The cottage sat just back from the road, its whitewashed walls catching the late sun and the low garden wall already half-covered in the sort of wildflowers that look accidental but probably aren’t. We pulled onto the short gravel drive, and the moment the engine stopped the sound of the sea took over, that soft, constant hush you only really notice once the traffic’s gone. I stepped out, stretched, and immediately managed to tread in something suspiciously seagull-related, which my trainers will never quite recover from.

Still, the view from the doorstep made up for it. You could just glimpse the water between the rooftops, a stripe of bright blue that promised proper beach walks without needing the car again. Inside, the place felt instantly welcoming—low ceilings, a wood burner already laid ready, and that faint scent of woodsmoke and lemon cleaner that says someone’s been in to make it nice. The kitchen was small but perfectly judged, with enough mugs for unexpected visitors and a window over the sink that looked straight out onto the lane. Upstairs, the bedroom at the front caught the evening light just right, and I found myself standing there longer than planned, watching a couple of locals amble past with their dogs.

After the long drive it was oddly grounding to be somewhere so compact and lived-in. I’d spent the last hundred miles worrying whether the place would feel too polished or too sparse, but Broadlands managed the rare trick of feeling like someone’s actual home rather than a stage set for holidays. The little mishaps of the journey—the wrong turning, the dubious parking spot, even the seagull incident—already felt like part of the story instead of annoyances. Standing there with a cup of tea that had gone cold because I’d got distracted by the view, I realised the best bits of a Cornish break often start before you’ve even unpacked.
