About Cornwall
Inside, everything was exactly as promised: a bright little kitchen ready for the bare minimum of cooking, a squishy sofa angled toward the window, and a garden that opened straight onto the coastal path. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and did what any sensible pair on holiday should do—we made tea and took it outside. The air smelled of salt and warm grass, and we sat there for a good hour doing absolutely nothing but watching the light change on the water. The next morning we wandered down to the beach with nothing but a blanket and a couple of paperbacks. The sand was warm underfoot, the tide was out, and the only sound was the gentle hush of waves and the occasional gull arguing with itself. We spread the blanket, lay back, and promptly forgot what page we’d been on. Every so often one of us would sit up, squint at the horizon, and say something profound like “we should probably move soon,” before settling straight back down again. By the third day the pattern had set itself. Mornings were for slow breakfasts on the patio—toast, local jam, and the sort of coffee that tastes better simply because you’re not rushing. Afternoons were for the beach or, if we were feeling especially ambitious, a short stroll along the coastal path to the next cove and back. We collected a few pebbles, skipped a few stones, and returned to the cottage in time for another round of doing very little. Even the seagulls seemed to approve; they perched on the fence and watched us with the same lazy interest we gave them. I’d come down with the vague idea that we ought to “make the most” of the week—maybe a coastal walk or two, perhaps a cream tea somewhere with a view. Instead we found ourselves perfectly content with the rhythm we’d fallen into: wake when the sun does, read until the words blur, paddle when the tide is right, and watch the evening light slide across the garden. There’s a quiet sort of guilt that creeps in when you realise you’ve spent an entire day moving only from sofa to blanket to bed, but it passes quickly once you remember that slowing down was exactly why you came. By the time we packed the car again, the satnav could have sent us anywhere and I doubt we’d have cared. The real journey had been the short one from the front door to the beach and back again, and the only mishap worth remembering was how thoroughly we’d managed to do nothing at all—and how surprisingly wonderful that had felt. |
