About Sea Sands.
The village of Praa Sands rests between Helston and Marazion on the south coast of Cornwall, known for its mile-long sandy beach and excellent surfing conditions. There is a beachfront bar/restaurant boasting wonderful views, making it the perfect spot for sunset drinks. Also home to the allegedly haunted Pengersick Castle, the tower of which dates back to the 16th century. The bustling Penzance and Helston are within easy reach, hosting a range of attractions and amenities. Nearby attractions.
About Cornwall
After dumping the bags we set off for a quick “stretch-our-legs” stroll that somehow turned into an accidental treasure hunt. Instead of heading straight along the obvious beach path we veered left at a half-hidden stile and found ourselves on a narrow trail that climbed between brambles and thrift. Twenty minutes later the sea appeared again, but from a completely different angle: a tiny crescent of sand framed by slate outcrops that didn’t appear on any map we’d glanced at. A rope swing hung from an old oak, and two local dogs were already using it as their personal merry-go-round. We claimed the driftwood bench that someone had wedged into the grass and watched the tide nibble at the rocks while a seal popped its head up like it was checking we’d arrived safely. Further poking about revealed a freshwater stream that trickled out of the undergrowth and disappeared under the sand—perfect for rinsing sandy feet without trudging back to the cottage. We followed it inland for a few hundred metres and stumbled across a disused lime kiln half-swallowed by ivy; the sort of place you only notice if you’re already lost. Sitting on its warm stone lip, I realised how rarely we let ourselves wander without a plan. Usually I’m the one with the colour-coded itinerary; today the satnav had done me a favour by forcing us off-script. By the time we wandered back, the light had turned that soft, goldy-pink that makes everything look gentler. The cottage’s little patio caught the last of the sun, and we sat with mugs of tea watching a cormorant skim the waves. It struck me that the best bits of any holiday often happen when the map gets ignored and your shoes get properly sandy. We’d only been here a few hours, yet already Sea Sands felt less like a place we’d booked and more like a secret we’d stumbled into. |
