We set off from home in a bit of a drizzle, the sort that makes you wonder whether you’ve packed enough jumpers, and by the time we reached the lane leading down to See Two Seas the rain had properly decided to join us. I’d been so keen to get the first glimpse of the sea that I hopped out to open the gate, slipped straight into a puddle the size of a small paddling pool, and ended up with one sodden trainer and a dignity that never quite recovered. My partner found it hilarious; the dog, less so, since it meant an unexpected detour back to the car for dry socks before we’d even parked.

Still, the cottage looked every bit as welcoming as the photos had promised, its whitewashed walls catching what little light the October sky offered. The wind off the Atlantic was already carrying that unmistakable tang of salt and seaweed, and the windows framed a view straight across to the headland where the waves were busy rearranging the rocks. Inside, the wood burner was laid ready—thoughtful touch—and we got it going straight away, the flames settling into that steady crackle that makes any Cornish cottage feel instantly homely.

Because it was late autumn the beach below was almost empty, just a couple of hardy dog-walkers and the occasional surfer in a thick winter suit catching the last of the bigger swells. We wandered down after lunch, well wrapped up, and found the sand firm underfoot from the cooler nights. The light had that soft, low quality that turns everything slightly golden for about twenty minutes before the sun slips away, and we stood there longer than we meant to, watching a seal pop its head up between the waves.

Back at the cottage the kitchen window steamed up while we made tea, and I caught myself thinking how different this trip felt from our usual summer dashes. There’s something about the shorter days that slows everything down; you notice the way the gorse still clings to a few yellow flowers, or how the cottage’s little garden smells of damp earth and woodsmoke. I also noticed, rather sheepishly, that I’d spent the first hour complaining about the weather when really it was the weather that had given us the place almost to ourselves.

By early evening the rain had eased to a fine mist, the sort that makes the coastal path glisten. We lit a few candles, put the kettle on again, and simply sat, listening to the sea through the open window. It struck me that sometimes the best holidays aren’t the ones with endless sunshine, but the ones where the season itself becomes part of the story—reminding you to slow down, to notice small things, and, occasionally, to pack an extra pair of socks.
