We set off from the train station with the kind of optimism that only comes from having left the house on time for once, the boot stuffed with beach towels, wellies, and enough snacks to feed a small army. The sat-nav led us confidently down narrow Cornish lanes until, just outside St Ives, we turned into what we thought was the right driveway and promptly discovered we’d arrived at someone else’s holiday cottage entirely. A very polite lady in gardening gloves pointed us back up the hill, and five minutes later we pulled up outside Sparrows Nest, the real one, with its whitewashed walls glowing in the late afternoon sun and a view straight over the dunes to the sea.

The key was exactly where the owner had promised, tucked under a terracotta pot by the back door, and the first thing that hit us was the smell of salt and warm grass drifting through the open windows. Inside, everything felt simple and welcoming: a scrubbed pine table big enough for board games, squashy sofas facing the view, and a little galley kitchen already stocked with tea bags and a note wishing us “a proper Cornish rest.” We kicked off our shoes, claimed bedrooms with the usual mild negotiations about who got the bigger window, and stepped straight out onto the tiny patio where the children immediately began hunting for interesting pebbles.

By the time we’d unpacked the car it was almost teatime, so we wandered the short path down to the beach, shoes in hand, the sand still warm from the day. The tide was out, leaving long glassy pools perfect for small feet and the occasional crab, and we spent a happy hour collecting shells while the older ones tried, unsuccessfully, to skim stones. Back at the cottage the sun had started to dip, turning the sea a soft silver, and we threw together a quick pasta on the little stove, eating outside with jumpers on as the air cooled.

Sitting there, watching the last swimmers wade in and the gulls wheel overhead, I caught myself thinking how rarely we manage to slow down like this. The journey mishap already felt like part of the story rather than a nuisance, and the cottage, with its unpretentious comfort and that unbeatable view, seemed to invite exactly the sort of unhurried family days we’d been craving. Tomorrow we’d explore properly, but tonight it was enough to sit together, listen to the waves, and feel properly arrived.
