We’d barely been on the road an hour when the sat-nav decided we were better off in a hedge than on the lane. One wrong turn later we were wedged between two dry-stone walls, the wing mirror kissing nettles, and my other half laughing so hard he couldn’t reverse us out. By the time we finally crunched onto the gravel at Tranquility, the cottage felt less like a holiday let and more like a reward.

The front door opened straight onto a sun-trap patio where two stripy deckchairs already looked half-asleep. Inside, everything smelled faintly of sea air and fresh bread left out on the side. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and that was pretty much the plan for the next four days.

Mornings started late. We’d wander down the short path to the beach with nothing but a thermos and yesterday’s paper, then spend an embarrassing amount of time deciding whose towel got the better patch of sand. Once settled, the only real decision was whether to read another chapter or simply watch the gulls argue over a discarded pasty wrapper. The tide came in so gently it felt like an apology rather than an interruption.

Back at the cottage, lunch happened whenever hunger remembered us—usually hunks of cheese and whatever the local shop had baked that morning, eaten on the patio with bare feet on warm flagstones. Afternoons dissolved into the same gentle rhythm: a doze in the hammock, a chapter that somehow turned into three, the occasional stroll along the coastal path that never quite made it past the next cove because the view kept persuading us to stop.

Evenings were soft and unhurried. We’d light the little fire pit, pour something cold, and let the sky do most of the talking while the waves kept up their steady shushing below. One night we meant to drive into Falmouth for fish and chips, but the sunset looked so settled we stayed put and made do with toast instead. Neither of us minded.

Looking back, the sat-nav mishap feels like the best thing that could have happened. It forced us to arrive slightly rattled and therefore perfectly ready to do absolutely nothing at all.
