We set off in that peculiar Cornish drizzle that never quite commits to rain, the sort that makes the windscreen wipers feel a bit dramatic. Halfway down the narrow lane to Trelights our satnav cheerfully announced we’d arrived, right beside a field gate with absolutely no house in sight. After a sheepish three-point turn that left us nose-first in a hedge, we finally spotted the little wooden sign for Westaway House and trundled the last hundred yards, sheepishly laughing at our own overconfidence.

The cottage sits just above Port Isaac, tucked behind a low stone wall that still carries the faint scent of last year’s honeysuckle. Arriving in early October meant the lane was lined with turning leaves rather than summer traffic, and the beach below was almost empty except for a couple walking their spaniel. The air felt sharper than the photos suggested, carrying that clean, salty edge that makes you instinctively reach for an extra jumper the moment you step out of the car.

Inside, the wood burner was already laid—thoughtful touch—and we lit it straight away, grateful for the autumn chill that had crept in while we unpacked. From the sitting-room window we could see the slate rooftops of Port Isaac catching the low afternoon light, and the sea beyond looked almost metallic. It was the sort of view that makes you linger with a mug of tea instead of rushing straight out again.

We wandered down to the harbour later, hands in pockets, watching the few remaining fishing boats bob against the quay. The little off-season café was still open, serving pasties that steamed in the cool air, and we ate them on a bench watching gulls wheel above the cliffs. Everything felt slower, quieter, as though the village itself had exhaled after the summer rush.

Back at Westaway House that evening, the wood burner crackled while we flicked through the guest book and read notes from families who’d stayed in July. Their comments about barbecues and late sunsets made our own evening feel almost cosily exclusive. I found myself wondering whether we’d have noticed the cottage’s calm quite so clearly if we’d visited in peak season, when every path and cove is busy. There’s something about the shoulder months that turns a simple weekend away into a gentle reminder to slow down—rain on the lane, steam on the windows, and the quiet satisfaction of having the beach, for once, almost to ourselves.
