Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol. We'd set off full of beans, me behind the wheel with the sat-nav blaring directions, but about an hour in, disaster struck—my other half decided it was the perfect moment to spill an entire thermos of tea right across the passenger footwell. Cue soggy maps, frantic mopping with service station napkins, and me trying not to hydroplane on the A38 while laughing so hard I nearly missed the turn for Saltash. "This is holiday vibes already," I joked, though secretly I was picturing us arriving looking like drowned rats.

By the time we trundled into the narrow lanes near Saltash, the anticipation was buzzing. I'd been dreaming of that classic Cornish escape—craggy coasts, pasties for tea, and no emails pinging away. Pulling up to the cottage, though, it was love at first sight. It's one of those cosy, traditional terraced spots tucked away in a quiet row, with a cheery white exterior and flower baskets nodding in the breeze. The key turned smoothly in the lock (thank goodness, after our morning), and stepping inside, it was like the place had been waiting just for us. Spotless kitchen with all the mod cons, a lounge that screamed "put your feet up," and upstairs, bedrooms that felt snug without being cramped. First impressions? Spot on—way comfier than our usual hotel dashes.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out to shake off the road dust, barely a five-minute wander to the waterside. St. Germans Quay is right on the doorstep, that quirky little spot where the River Tiddy meets the Tamar. We grabbed fish and chips from a van there, salty and perfect, watching boats bob about as the sun dipped low. Honestly, it was magical—seagulls squawking overhead, that fresh sea air hitting you like a reset button. Back at the cottage that evening, we cracked open a bottle of local cider and sprawled on the sofa, the mishaps of the day already fading into a funny story.

The next morning brought more of the same charm. A short stroll took us to the historic St. Germans church, its tower poking up like an old friend, and we poked around the paths by the creek, spotting herons and feeling properly unplugged. I had a quiet moment there, sat on a bench with a cuppa from the flask (lid on tight this time), reflecting on how these little getaways remind me to slow down. Life back home rushes by, but here, with the cottage as our base, everything just... settles. No grand adventures needed; the simple stuff—the clink of crockery in that well-stocked kitchen, the view from the window onto the lane—hits different.

We've been back a few times now, and that arrival chaos? It's become part of the tradition. Cornwall's got this way of turning small dramas into the best memories, especially from a gem like this cottage. If you're after a proper Cornish retreat without the crowds, you won't go far wrong round here.
