Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Looe – that classic British holiday road trip where everything starts so promisingly until it doesn’t. We’d piled into the car in Bristol with a boot full of snacks, playlists sorted, and me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. About halfway, just past Plymouth, we hit a proper Cornish summer downpour. Cue the wipers on full whack and me yelling directions over the rain while my other half gripped the wheel like it was a rollercoaster. Then, disaster: a rogue seagull dive-bombed the windscreen, leaving us splattered and laughing hysterically. “Welcome to Cornwall,” I gasped, wiping tears from my eyes. By the time we wound down those twisty lanes into Looe, we were soaked but buzzing with that fizzy anticipation of arriving somewhere special.

Pulling up to the property, my heart did a little flip. It’s one of those classic detached holiday cottages, all cosy and inviting with a welcoming vibe that screams “kick off your shoes and stay a while.” First impressions? Spot on. The garden wrapped around it like a hug – lush, private, and with sea glimpses peeking through the hedges. We dumped the bags and just stood there, breathing in that salty air, grinning like idiots.

From that moment, the whole week was about doing precisely nothing, and it was pure bliss. No grand plans, no ticking off bucket lists – just lazy cottage days that melted into each other. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the patio: strong tea, toast slathered in jam from the local shop, and the papers scattered about. I’d flop into one of those cushy garden chairs with a book – some mindless thriller I’d been saving – and lose hours watching the clouds scoot by. The garden was my favourite bit, really. It’s got this wild, untamed charm with flowerbeds bursting with colour and a lawn perfect for stretching out. I’d potter about for five minutes, deadheading a rose or two, then give up and sink back into a lounger with a cold drink. “Gardening’s overrated,” I’d mutter to myself, chuckling.

Afternoons blurred into siestas. We’d wander down to the beach maybe once, just a gentle stroll along the sands at Hannafore, paddling in the rock pools and skim-reading the waves. But mostly, it was back to the cottage for more of the same: reading till my eyes crossed, napping under the parasol, and chatting nonsense about nothing. Evenings meant firing up the barbecue – nothing fancy, just bangers and corn on the cob – eaten al fresco as the sun dipped low. One night, I caught myself staring at the sunset, pint in hand, and had this quiet moment of self-reflection: when did life get so rushed? Here, time slowed to a crawl, and it felt like the best gift ever. No emails pinging, no deadlines – just the joy of being.

By the end of the week, we’d done bugger all and felt utterly recharged. Packing up felt wrong, like leaving an old mate. If you’re after a proper unwind, this is it – Cornwall’s secret to slowing right down. Can’t wait to go back.
